1983–1991 (album)
''1983–1991'' is a four-CD box set of material by Supergroup (music), supergroup This Mortal Coil, released on March 30, 1993 on the 4AD label. The box set was released only in the United States, and was distributed by Warner Bros. Records, with whom 4AD maintained a distribution deal at the time. This marked the first domestic American release for most of the band's output, as only the debut album, ''It'll End in Tears'', had been released in the United States previously. A boxed set or (its US name) box set is a set of items (for example, a compilation of books, musical recordings, films or television programs) traditionally packaged in a box, hence 'boxed', and offered for sale as a single unit. Music Artists and bands with a long and successful career often have anthology or "essential" collections of their music released as box sets. These often include rare and never-before-released tracks. The Apartments
The Apartments are an Australian indie music, indie band formed in 1978 in Brisbane, Queensland. The band split up in 1979 but reformed in 1984 and continued until 1997, with a new version of the band forming in 2007. Based in Sydney, New South Wales, the band has continued to perform and record, with the ninth album and most recent release, ''In and Out of the Light'' released in September 2020. Chris Bell (American Musician)
Christopher Branford Bell (January 12, 1951December 27, 1978) was an American musician and singer-songwriter. Along with Alex Chilton, he led the power pop band Big Star (band), Big Star through its first album Number 1 Record, ''#1 Record'' (1972). He also pursued a solo career throughout the mid-1970s, resulting in the posthumous ''I Am the Cosmos'' LP. AllMusic Guide praised Bell as "one of the unsung heroes of American pop music" and noted his lasting impression, saying: "Despite a life marked by tragedy and a career crippled by commercial indifference, the singer/songwriter's slim body of recorded work proved massively influential on the generations of indie rockers who emerged in his wake." The Byrds
The Byrds () were an American Rock music, rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1964. The band underwent multiple lineup changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn (known as Jim McGuinn until mid-1967) being the sole consistent member. Although their time as one of the most popular groups in the world only lasted for a short period in the mid-1960s, the Byrds are considered by critics to be among the most influential rock acts of their era. The band's signature sound of "angelic harmonies" and McGuinn's jangle, jangly Twelve-string guitar, 12-string Rickenbacker Electric guitar, guitar sound was "absorbed into the vocabulary of rock" and has continued to be influential. Pearls Before Swine (band)
Pearls Before Swine was an American folk rock band formed by Tom Rapp in 1965 in Eau Gallie, which is now part of Melbourne, Florida. They released six albums between 1967 and 1971, before Rapp launched a solo career. Early years, 1965–68 With high school friends Wayne Harley (banjo, mandolin), Lane Lederer (bass, guitar) and Roger Crissinger (piano, organ), Rapp wrote and recorded some songs which, inspired by the Fugs, they sent to the avant-garde ESP-Disk label in New York. The group took its name from a Bible passage: "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine ...." (Mat. 7:6, KJV), meaning: do not give things of value to those who will not understand or appreciate them. Michael Brook
Michael Brook (born 1951) is a Canadian guitarist, inventor, music producer, and film music composer. He plays in many genres, including rock, electronica, world music, minimalism and film scores. His collaborations with musicians around the world have made him "one of the most sought-after producers in the music industry." Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Brook lives in Los Angeles. He is the creator of the Infinite Guitar. Career Brook studied music and electronics at York University and worked as an engineer at the Grant Avenue studios, then owned by the Lanois brothers. Pieter Nooten
Pieter Nooten (born 22 January 1961 in Oss) is a Dutch musician and composer best known for his work with Clan of Xymox. Music career Nooten's musical career began in the late 1970s. Starting out as the drummer in a local symphonic rock band, he quickly changed to bass guitar and later keyboards, playing in different bands. At the height of house squatting culture and new wave, Nooten met Anka Wolbert and Ronny Moorings who had just formed Clan of Xymox together. During the mid-eighties Clan of Xymox recorded two highly acclaimed albums on 4AD. In 1987, he teamed up with Michael Brook to record '' Sleeps with the Fishes'', released also on 4AD. This album would become Nooten's most acclaimed work. In 1989, Clan of Xymox (by then simply "Xymox") signed to Polygram and released their third album, ''Twist of Shadows''. Tim Buckley
Timothy Charles Buckley III (February 14, 1947 – June 29, 1975) was an American musician. He began his career based in folk rock, but subsequently experimented with genres such as psychedelia, jazz, the avant-garde, and funk paired with his unique five-octave vocal range. His commercial peak came with the 1969 album '' Happy Sad'', reaching No. 81 on the charts, while his experimental 1970 album '' Starsailor'' went on to become a cult classic. The latter contained his best known song, " Song to the Siren." Buckley died at the age of 28 from a heroin and morphine overdose. "Song to the Siren" is a song written by Tim Buckley and Larry Beckett, first released by Buckley on his 1970 album ''Starsailor (album), Starsailor''. It was later included on ''Morning Glory: The Tim Buckley Anthology'', featuring a performance of the song from the final episode of ''The Monkees (TV series), The Monkees''. Pat Boone was the first to release a recording of the song on his 1969 album ''Departure (Pat Boone album), Departure'', predating Buckley's version. Mary Margaret O'Hara is a Canadian singer-songwriter, actress and composer. She is best known for the album ''Miss America'', released in 1988. She released two albums and an EP under her own name, and remains active as a live performer, as a contributor to compilation albums and as a guest collaborator on other artists' albums.
