1982–83 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup
The 17th season of World Cup competition began in December 1982 in Switzerland and concluded in March 1983 in Japan. For the first time, the overall titles were both won by Americans, Tamara McKinney and Phil Mahre. Mahre won his third consecutive overall World Cup title; McKinney became the first American woman (and third North American, after Mahre and Nancy Greene of Canada) to win the overall title. A major change in the World Cup series this year was the introduction of a new race, considered to be a combination of downhill and giant slalom, which was named "Super G". Because there were only five Super G races held during the season (three men's events and two ladies' events), the races were classified with the Giant Slalom discipline for the season awards (as well as for the next two seasons). Phil Mahre
Phillip Ferdinand Mahre (born May 10, 1957) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer, widely regarded as one of the greatest American skiers of all time. Mahre competed on the World Cup circuit from 1976 to 1984. Starting with the 1978 season, Mahre finished in the top three in the World Cup overall standings for six consecutive seasons, winning the title in the final three (1981, 1982, and 1983). His total of 27 World Cup race wins is fourth among Americans, only behind Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn, and Bode Miller. Giant Slalom
Giant slalom (GS) is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding competitive discipline. It involves racing between sets of poles ("gates") spaced at a greater distance from each other than in Slalom skiing, slalom but less than in Super-G. Giant slalom and slalom make up the technical events in alpine ski racing. This category separates them from the speed events of Super-G and Downhill (ski competition), downhill. The technical events are normally composed of two runs, held on different courses on the same ski run. Course The vertical drop for a GS course must be for men, and for women. The number of gates in this event is 56–70 for men and 46–58 for women. The number of direction changes in a GS course equals 11–15% of the vertical drop of the course in metres, 13–18% for children. Peter Müller (born 6 October 1957) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Switzerland. Career A world champion in 1987 in the downhill, Müller was a silver medalist the downhill in two world championships (1985 and 1989) and two Olympic games (1984 and 1988). Müller won the World Cup season title in the downhill in 1979, 1980, and 1982 (tied with Steve Podborski of Canada). Müller finished second in the World Cup downhill standings in 1985, 1986, and 1987. His best finish in the overall standings was fourth, which he achieved three times. Hartmann "Harti" Weirather (born 25 January 1958) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Austria. Born in Reutte, Tyrol, he specialized in the downhill event. Racing career During the early 1980s, Weirather won six World Cup downhill races and won the downhill at the 1982 World Championships in Schladming, Austria.
