1981–82 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup
The 16th World Cup season began in December 1981 in France and concluded in March 1982, also in France. Phil Mahre of the US repeated as overall champion, the second of his three consecutive titles. Erika Hess of Switzerland won the women's overall title. A break in the schedule was for the 1982 World Championships, held in Schladming, Austria, between January 28 and February 7, 1982. Phil Mahre
Phillip Ferdinand Mahre (born May 10, 1957) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer, widely regarded as one of the greatest American skiers of all time. Mahre competed on the World Cup circuit from 1976 to 1984. Starting with the 1978 season, Mahre finished in the top three in the World Cup overall standings for six consecutive seasons, winning the title in the final three (1981, 1982, and 1983). His total of 27 World Cup race wins is fourth among Americans, only behind Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn, and Bode Miller. Early years Mahre was born in Yakima, Washington alongside his fraternal twin brother Steve (who is four minutes younger). Alpine Skiing Combined
Combined is an event in alpine ski racing. The event format has changed within the last 30 years. A traditional combined competition is a two-day event consisting of one run of downhill and two runs of slalom; each discipline takes place on a separate day. The winner is the skier with the fastest aggregate time. Until the 1990s, a complicated point system was used to determine placings in the combined event. Since then, a modified version, called either an "alpine combined" (with a downhill as the speed event) or a "super combined" (with a super-G as the speed event), has been run as an aggregate time event consisting of two runs: first, a one-run speed event and then only one run of slalom, with both portions held on the same day. Val Gardena
Val Gardena (; ; ) is a valley in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, Northern Italy. It is best known as a tourist skiing, rock climbing, and woodcarving area. Geography The valley's main river is the Derjon, a tributary of the Eisack river. Paolo De Chiesa
Paolo De Chiesa (born 14 March 1956) is an Italian journalist and former alpine skier who competed in the 1980 Winter Olympics and in the 1984 Winter Olympics. De Chiesa has been a technical commentator for RAI in ski races for several years. Biography He was born in Saluzzo, Piedmont. De Chiesa competed in two Olympic slalom events but was not able to finish one of these races. He also scored several podium placements in the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Madonna Di Campiglio
Madonna di Campiglio () is a village and a ski resort in northeast Italy. It is a ''frazione'' of the ''comune'' of Pinzolo. The village lies in the Val Rendena at an elevation of above sea level, and has approximately 1,000 inhabitants. Leonhard Stock
Leonhard Stock (born 14 March 1958) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Austria. Career Stock earned his first World Cup points at age 18 in January 1977. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, Stock was originally an alternate for the downhill, but his fast training times on the course at Whiteface Mountain earned him a spot on the four-man Austrian team. On race day, he was the ninth racer on the course and posted the fastest time to win the gold medal. Stock could not repeat his surprise win at the Lake Placid Olympics on the World Cup tour until almost a decade later, winning downhill races in 1989, 1990, and 1992. At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, he just missed a second Olympic medal, finishing fourth in the downhill and eighth in the Super-G at Nakiska. Andreas Wenzel (born 18 March 1958) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Liechtenstein, active from 1976 to 1988. Born in Planken, he was the overall World Cup champion in 1980, the same season in which his older sister Hanni won the women's overall title. He also won two season titles in the combined event, in 1984 and 1985. Ingemar Stenmark
Jan Ingemar Stenmark (; born 18 March 1956) is a Swedish former FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cup Alpine skiing, alpine ski racer. He is regarded as a legendary skier and one of the most prominent Swedish athletes ever, having won several Olympic medals and world cups during his career. When he retired in 1989, he held the record for the greatest number of international race wins, a record that was only broken in 2023 by Mikaela Shiffrin and remains unbroken amongst men. Joël Gaspoz (born 25 September 1962) is a Swiss former alpine skier. Career He competed in the slalom and giant slalom at the 1980, 1984 and 1988 Olympics with the best result of seventh place in the giant slalom in 1980. Career A world champion in 1987 in the downhill, Müller was a silver medalist the downhill in two world championships (1985 and 1989) and two Olympic games (1984 and 1988).
