1979–80 Winnipeg Jets Season
The 1979–80 Winnipeg Jets season was the organization's eighth season since its inception in 1972, and its first season in the National Hockey League. Offseason After spending seven seasons in the World Hockey Association, in which the team won three Avco Cup championships, the Winnipeg Jets joined the National Hockey League, as did the Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques, as the WHA disbanded. On June 13, 1979, the Jets participated in the 1979 NHL expansion draft to fill out their roster, while on June 28, 1979, Winnipeg made their first ever trade, as the Jets sent Jamie Hislop to the Quebec Nordiques in exchange for Barry Legge. On August 8, 1979, the Jets selected Jimmy Mann of the Sherbrooke Castors of the QMJHL with their first ever draft pick at the 1979 NHL entry draft. Western Conference (NHL)
The Western Conference () is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference. History Originally named the Clarence Campbell Conference (or Campbell Conference for short), it was created in 1974–75 NHL season, 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The conferences and divisions were re-aligned in 1981–82 NHL season, 1981 to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the existing names were retained with the Campbell Conference becoming the conference for the NHL's westernmost teams. The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton. Leksands IF
Leksands Idrottsförening is a Swedish professional ice hockey team from the town of Leksand in the region of Dalarna. The team plays in the top-tier league, Swedish Hockey League (SHL), after succeeding through the 2019 SHL qualifiers and thus earning promotion to the SHL. The club's home arena is Tegera Arena, which seats 7,650 spectators. History The club was formed on 13 August 1919, originally playing bandy and ski competitions. In 1920 they also took up football. Thomas Steen
Anders Thomas Steen (born June 8, 1960) is a Swedes, Swedish former professional ice hockey player and coach. Steen is the former city councillor for the Winnipeg ward of Elmwood, Winnipeg, Elmwood-East Kildonan. Steen played professional ice hockey in the Swedish Hockey League, Elitserien, National Hockey League and Deutsche Eishockey Liga. In his time in the NHL, he spent the entirety of his career with the original Winnipeg Jets (1972–1996), Winnipeg Jets. Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL; , LHJMQ), formerly the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is one of the three major junior ice hockey leagues that constitute the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). The league includes teams in Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the The Maritimes, Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, and previously had teams in Maine and New York (state), New York in the United States. The Gilles-Courteau Trophy is the championship trophy of the league. Sherbrooke Castors
The Sherbrooke Castors or Beavers (in English) was the name of two different junior ice hockey teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and another team in the Quebec Eastern Provincial Hockey League. Both later franchises played at the Palais des Sports in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Earlier Castors The earlier Sherbrooke Beavers were a senior ice hockey team which won the 1965 Allan Cup, and previously played in the Quebec Eastern Provincial Hockey League, an amateur league and team from 1959 to 1962. Original Castors The Sherbrooke Castors (1969-1982) moved to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec in 1982, named the Saint-Jean Castors. In 1989 they were renamed the Saint-Jean Lynx. Barry Legge
Barry Graham Legge (born October 22, 1954) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played 107 games in the National Hockey League and 345 games in the World Hockey Association. He played for the Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques, Michigan Stags, Baltimore Blades, Denver Spurs, Ottawa Civics, Cleveland Crusaders, Minnesota Fighting Saints, and Cincinnati Stingers. Career After five full seasons in the WHA, Barry Legge spent part of three seasons with the Quebec Nordiques and the Winnipeg Jets from 1979-80 to 1981-82. He was well known for his defensive play from a very young age. The Winnipeg native first made a name for himself with the Fort St. James Canadians before joining the hometown Jets of the WCJHL. Jamie Hislop
James Donald Hislop (born January 20, 1954) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward who played for the Cincinnati Stingers in the World Hockey Association from 1976 to 1979 and then the Quebec Nordiques and Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1979 and 1984. He helped the Flames reach the NHL playoff semifinals for the first time in club history in 1981. After his playing career he worked as an assistant coach with the Flames and then as a scout with the Minnesota Wild. Playing career Born in Sarnia, Ontario, Hislop played junior hockey in Tier II Ontario Hockey Association play. Hislop attended the University of New Hampshire under legendary coach Charlie Holt.
