The 1979–80 French Rugby Union Championship was won by AS Béziers Hérault, Béziers beating Stade Toulousain, Toulouse in the final. The group B was won by Stade Olympique Chambérien Rugby, Chambéry beating Soyaux Angoulême XV Charente, Angoulême in the final. Formula For the first time, the clubs of the "Group B" didn't participate for the title, but play a proper championship. The group A, like the group B was divided in four pools of ten clubs. Aviron Bayonnais (AB, ), commonly called Bayonne, is a French rugby union club from Bayonne (''Baiona'' in Basque) in Pyrénées-Atlantiques which competes in the Top 14, the top tier of the French league system. US Montauban () is a French rugby union club that currently competes in Pro D2, the second level of the country's professional league system. They have also competed at the top level, Top 14, in the past, most recently between 2007 and 2010. The club is based in Montauban in the ''département of'' Tarn-et-Garonne in Occitania. In April 2010, it was announced the club would be relegated from the Top 14 to the Pro D2 at the end of the 2009/2010 season after breaking budget rules for the league.
