1978–79 New York Rangers Season
The 1978–79 New York Rangers season was the franchise's List of New York Rangers seasons, 53rd season. The highlight of the season was participating in the Stanley Cup Finals, as the Rangers played 12 consecutive playoff games without losing in regulation. Offseason The Rangers fired their general manager John Ferguson Sr., John Ferguson and head coach Jean-Guy Talbot, replacing them with former Philadelphia Flyers and two-time Stanley Cup-winning coach Fred Shero. The Rangers signed forwards Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson (ice hockey), Ulf Nilsson away from the World Hockey Association, WHA's Winnipeg Jets. The Rangers chose Don Maloney with their first pick, in the second-round, 26th over-all. Maloney was the younger brother of Dave Maloney, a defenceman with the Rangers. Don Maloney
Donald Michael Maloney (born September 5, 1958) is a Canadian ice hockey executive and former player, currently serving as President of Hockey Operations of the Calgary Flames. He was formerly the general manager of the New York Islanders and Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes. He played for the New York Rangers for parts of eleven seasons. In addition, he played with his brother Dave Maloney while with the Rangers. Don was selected as the 26th player in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. Brother Dave was a summer instructor at the Orr-Walton Sports Camp when Don was drafted by the Rangers. Playing career Maloney was traded to the Hartford Whalers during the 1988–89 season. He also played for the Rangers' perennial rivals, the New York Islanders, from 1989 to 1991. Atlanta Flames
The Atlanta Flames were a professional ice hockey team based in Atlanta from 1972 until 1980. They played home games in the Omni Coliseum and were members of the West and later Patrick divisions of the National Hockey League (NHL). Along with the New York Islanders, the Flames were created in 1971 as part of the NHL's conflict with the rival World Hockey Association (WHA). The team enjoyed modest success on the ice, qualifying for the playoffs in six of its eight seasons, but failed to win a playoff series and won only two post-season games total.
