1978–79 FC Basel Season
The FC Basel, Fussball Club Basel 1893 1978–79 season was their 85th season since the club was founded. It was their 33rd consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after they won promotion during the season 1945–46. They played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium. This was René Theler's third period as chairman. Overview Pre-season Helmut Benthaus was first team manager for the fourteenth consecutive season. There were only a few changes in the squad. Eigil Nielsen (footballer, born 1948), Eigil Nielsen moved on to FC Luzern, Luzern. Serge Muhmenthaler was forced to terminate his playing career early due to his injury. Muhmenthaler would return a few years later as referee. From the season 1984–85 as referee in the Swiss Football Association and from 1989 as FIFA-Referee. FC Chiasso is a Swiss football club based in Chiasso. It was founded in 1905. Chiasso also played in the Italian first league between 1914 and 1923. The team currently play in 3. Rolf Schönauer (born 20 January 1961) is a Swiss retired footballer who played in the late 1970s and 1980s as defender. Schönauer played his youth football by SC Binningen and advanced to their first team in 1977. Erwin Meyer also known as James Meyer (born 26 November 1957) is a Swiss retired professional footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s as midfielder. Football career Meyer first played for SC Emmen. He joined FC Basel's first team for their 1978–79 season under head-coach Helmut Benthaus. FC Wettingen was a Swiss football club from Wettingen, Switzerland. It was founded in 1931, but due to financial problems they went bankrupt in 1993. In the same year it was refounded as ''FC Wettingen 93''. In the 2012/13 season, the name was changed back to ''FC Wettingen''. They play their home games at Stadion Altenburg. Robert Baldinger (born 1 March 1954) is a Swiss retired footballer who played as midfielder or striker in the 1970s and early 1980s.
