1978–79 Ecuadorian General Election
General elections were held in Ecuador in 1978 and 1979.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p379 The first round of the presidential election was held on 16 July 1978, with a second round held alongside parliamentary elections on 29 April 1979. The presidential election was won by Jaime Roldós Aguilera of the Concentration of People's Forces (CPF), who received 68.5% of the vote in the run-off, becoming the country's first freely-elected president. The CPF emerged as the largest party in the National Congress, winning 29 of the 69 seats.Nohlen, p395 The incumbent military dictatorship barred Assad Bucaram, the popular leader of the CFP from being a candidate in the election. Jaime Roldós Aguilera
Jaime Roldós Aguilera (November 5, 1940 – May 24, 1981) was an Ecuadorian politician who was the 33rd President of Ecuador from August 10, 1979 until his death on May 24, 1981. In his short tenure, he became known for his firm stance on human rights, which led to clashes with other Latin American governments and poor relations with Ronald Reagan's United States administration. On Sunday 24 May 1981, a plane in which he was travelling crashed, killing all passengers including Roldós and his wife. Controversy surrounds the circumstances of the crash, including the absence of a black box. Multiple investigations were carried out at the time, and in 2015-16, but no definite cause was determined. Early life and career Roldós was born in Guayaquil on 5 November 1940. He attended high school at the Vicente Rocafuerte National School. Conservative Party (Ecuador)
The Conservative Party (, abbreviated as ''PC'') was an Ecuadorian conservatism, conservative party formed in 1869. Initially associated with the military of Ecuador the PC became one of the two great parties of state in the country, alternating in power with the Ecuadorian Radical Liberal Party.
