1978 AAA Championships
The 1978 AAA Championships sponsored by Nationwide was the 1978 edition of the annual outdoor track and field competition organised by the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA). It was held from 23 to 24 June 1978 at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in London, England. Summary The Championships covered two days of competition. The marathon was held in Sandwich and the decathlon was held in Birmingham. Crystal Palace National Sports Centre
The National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace, London, Crystal Palace in south London, England is a large sports centre and outdoor Sport of athletics, athletics stadium. It was opened in 1964 in Crystal Palace Park, close to the site of the former The Crystal Palace, Crystal Palace Exhibition building which had been destroyed by fire in 1936, and is on the same site as the former FA Cup Final venue which was used here between 1895 and 1914. It was one of the five National Sports Centres, run on behalf of Sport England, but responsibility was transferred to the London Development Agency (now GLA Land and Property) and is managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited, under their Better brand logo. David Jenkins (sprinter)
David Andrew Jenkins (born 25 May 1952) is a former World ranked no.1 track and field 400 metres runner and statistically is the highest ranking Scottish sprinter in history. He was part of the British relay team which won a silver medal at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics. In 1988, he received a 7-year prison sentence for drug smuggling, but was able to serve a reduced sentence by becoming an informant. Early life and education Born in Pointe-à-Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago, British West Indies, Jenkins was the son of an oil refinery manager. Nick Rose (runner)
Nicholas Henry Rose (born 30 December 1951) is a British former international track and field athlete. He competed in a variety of middle-distance and long-distance running events and participated in the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1984 Summer Olympics. He set the world record in the half-marathon in 1979. Biography He is the current European record holder in the 10K run (road), and British record holder in the 4×1 mile relay event. His personal best in the half-marathon is 1:01:03, the second fastest British time after Steve Jones. He also held the British record in the indoor 2 miles event with 8:18.4—a record which stood for 24 years exactly. Wilson Waigwa
Wilson Wakiihuri Waigwa (born 15 February 1949) is a Kenyan long distance and middle-distance runner. He competed for Kenya in the 5,000 meters at the 1984 Olympics. He also competed for Kenya at the 1987 World Indoor Championships and the 1984 World Cross Country Championships. While competing for the University of Texas, El Paso he won the 1977 NCAA Championship in the 1,500 meters. He first broke 4 minutes for the mile on February 15, 1974 and was a formidable world class miler for more than a decade. Henry Rono
Henry Rono (12 February 1952 – 15 February 2024) was a Kenyan track and field athlete who specialised in various long-distance running events. Although he never competed at the Olympics, Rono is remembered as one of the most prolific collegiate competitors in the history of track in the United States, as well as being the former record holder for the 3000 metres steeplechase for over a decade. Rono also set the world record for the 5000 metres twice: once in 1978, then again in 1981. The British 5,000 metres athletics champions covers four competitions; the current British Athletics Championships which was founded in 2007, the preceding AAA Championships (1880-2006), the Amateur Athletic Club Championships (1866-1879) and finally the UK Athletics Championships which existed from 1977 until 1997 and ran concurrently with the AAA Championships. Craig Alford Masback (born 31 March 1955) is a retired American middle-distance runner who specialized in the mile and 1500 meters, recording 30 sub-four-minute miles, including a best of 3:52.02, winning the U.S. Indoor Championships at the mile distance in 1980, establishing an American record at 2000 meters in 1982, and representing the United States 10 times in international competition between 1976 and 1985. Amar Brahmia
Amar Brahmia (born 2 September 1954) is a retired Algerian middle-distance runner who specialized in the 1500 metres, who is now the national long-distance track coach of Algeria. He is the brother of Nacer and Baki Brahmia, both of whom also competed internationally. At the 1978 All-Africa Games he won a bronze medal in the 1500 metres and the silver medal in the 800 metres. He later won a bronze medal at the 1981 Summer Universiade. He became Algerian national champion in 1976 and 1978, and won a silver medal at the 1978 AAA Championships behind David Moorcroft. David Moorcroft
David Robert Moorcroft (born 10 April 1953) is a former middle-distance and long-distance runner from England, and former world record holder for 5,000 metres. His athletic career spanned the late-1970s and 1980s. He subsequently served as the Chief Executive of UK Athletics from 1997 to 2007. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1983 and promoted to an Officer (OBE) in 1999, in both cases for services to athletics. In March 2023, he was appointed a Deputy lieutenant of the West Midlands. David Marlais Jenner Warren (born 11 February 1956) is a male retired British middle-distance runner who competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics, reaching the final.
