1977–78 John Player Cup
The 1977–78 John Player Cup was the seventh edition of England's premier rugby union club competition at the time. Gloucester won the competition defeating Leicester in the final. The event was sponsored by John Player cigarettes and the final was held at Twickenham Stadium. Anglo-Welsh Cup
The Anglo-Welsh Cup (), was a cross-border rugby union knock-out cup competition that featured the 12 Premiership Rugby clubs and the four Welsh regions. It was a created as a replacement for the RFU Knockout Cup, which featured only English clubs. The competition was replaced by the Premiership Rugby Cup, involving only the 12 English Premiership clubs, beginning with the 2018–19 season. History Background RFU Knockout Cup From 1971 to 2005, English clubs played in the RFU Knockout Cup. At its formation, it was the highest honour that a club could win, as there were no nationally organised leagues until merit leagues were introduced in 1984, followed by the full national league pyramid in 1987. Gordon Sargent (rugby Union)
Gordon Alan Frank Sargent (18 October 1949 - 25 June 2013) was an English rugby union international. Sargent grew up in the town of Lydney near Gloucester and attended Lydney Secondary School. A prop, Sargent spent nine seasons at his hometown club Lydney RFC, before crossing to Gloucester in 1976. He featured in two John Player Cup title wins at Gloucester and was a Gloucestershire county captain. His only England cap was earned off the bench against Ireland at Lansdowne Road in the 1981 Five Nations, after an injury to Phil Blakeway. Chalkie White (rugby Player)
Herbert Victor "Chalkie" White (16 January 1929 – 24 January 2005) was an English rugby union player and later coach, instrumental in the success of Leicester Tigers. White was born in Carlisle and served in the Royal Navy before becoming a schoolteacher, having previously undertaken a 4-year specialist course in Physical Education at Borough Road College, Isleworth. He played scrum-half for Old Creightonians, Penzance & Newlyn, Camborne RFC and Leicester Tigers before his career was ended after he was diagnosed with Ménière's disease and lost his sense of balance. He thus turned to coaching Leicester, while teaching at Nottingham High School. At this time the game was still amateur, and coaching frowned upon as "cheating", but White installed a professional attitude at Leicester. Ian "Dosser" Smith
Ian Robert "Dosser" Smith (born 26 November 1957), is a former English Rugby player and schoolmaster. He played as flanker for Leicester Tigers. He was captain in the mid-1980s and later coach. He made 331 first XV appearances for Leicester, including five John Player Cup finals (1978–1982), of which three were won, and scored a total of 67 tries. However, he was not capped by England. He was director of coaching at Oakham School, then at Uppingham School. His son, centre/winger Matt Smith Matthew Robert Smith (born 28 October 1982) is an English actor. Peter Wheeler (rugby Union)
Peter John Wheeler, CBE (born 26 November 1948) is a former international rugby union player who played Hooker (rugby union), hooker and was Chief Executive of Leicester Tigers. Early life Wheeler attended Brockley County Grammar School and went on to play for Old Brockleians Rugby Club and Kent for three seasons. Playing career Wheeler was considered a tough and technically proficient hooker and was integral to Leicester's innovative and expansive style of play. Steve Redfern
Stephen Paul Redfern (born 26 October 1957) is an English former rugby union and professional rugby league player in the 1970s and 1980s. He played one test for in 1984, and between 1976 and 1984 played club rugby for Leicester Tigers. His position was tighthead prop. He then played professional rugby league for Sheffield Eagles, but injury limited him to only 9 appearance. Early years Redfern was born in Leicester, England. He attended Markfield High School and Coalville Grammar School. Redfern played his junior rugby for Coalville. Steve Johnson is a former Leicester Tigers and England blindside flanker. He made 207 appearances during the period 1976-83 for Leicester Tigers. Johnson scored 31 tries for the Tigers and captained the club from 1981 to 1983, making his final appearance in the John Player Cup final against Bristol. Garry John Adey (13 June 1945 – 17 August 2023) was an English rugby union Number 8 for Leicester Tigers and . Adey made 381 appearances for Leicester between 1965–81. He played twice for in 1976. Bleddyn Jones
Bleddyn Jones (7 August 1948 ― 27 April 2021) was a Welsh rugby commentator who worked principally for BBC Radio Leicester, commentating on Leicester Tigers matches since 1987. Bob Barker (rugby Union)
Robert George Barker (born 23 October 1944) is a former rugby union wing who played 320 times for Leicester Tigers between 1968 and 1979. In 1977 he became only the third Leicester player to score 150 tries for the club, and is still joint third in the clubs list of all time try scorers. Barker made his Leicester debut against Northampton Saints on 19 October 1968, despite scoring a try Barker was not used again until March when he became more of a regular featuring in 14 of the last 17 matches that season. Originally a centre Barker switched to his more common position on the wing during the 1969-70 season, during which he became the club's regular goal kicker and was the season's top scorer with 145 points.
