1977–78 FC Basel Season
The Fussball Club Basel 1893 1977–78 season was their 84th season since the club was founded. It was their 32nd consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after they won promotion during the season 1945–46. They played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium. René Theler was voted as club chairman at the AGM. This was Theler's second period as chairman. Overview Pre-season Helmut Benthaus was first team manager for the thirteenth consecutive season. During the off-season there were only two changes in the squad. Goalkeeper Hans Küng joined from Xamax and Hansruedi Schär joined from lower tier FC Oensingen. All other mutations were internal between the first team and the reserves. Hansruedi Schär
Hansruedi Schär (born 3 August 1957) is a Swiss retired footballer who played as midfielder in the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Olten Schär played his youth football on the local club in Oensingen. Schär joined Basel's first team for their 1977–78 season under head-coach Helmut Benthaus. After playing in one test match Schär played his domestic league debut for his new club in the away game on 11 December 1977 as Basel won 5–4 against Young Boys. He scored his first goal for the club on 4 March 1978 in the home game at the St. Jakob Stadium as Basel played against Sion. Schär scored the first goal of the match, Peter Ramseier added another and Roland Schönenberger scored a hat-trick as Basel won 5–0. The season 1979–80 Nationalliga A was an exciting season. Jörg Stohler
Jörg Stohler (born 27 August 1949) is a Switzerland, Swiss former Switzerland national football team, international football (soccer), footballer who played as a defender during the 1970s and 1980s. He played over 300 League Championship matches and won the Swiss Super League, Swiss League Championship four times. He also won the Swiss Cup, the Swiss League Cup and Coppa delle Alpi once. Servette FC is a Swiss professional Association football, football club based in Geneva, founded in March 1890 with rugby as its first sporting activity, and named after the Geneva district of the same name. 1977–78 UEFA Cup
The 1977–78 UEFA Cup was the seventh season of the UEFA Cup, the third-tier club football competition organised by UEFA. The final was played over two legs at the Stade Armand-Cesari, Furiani, France, and at the Philips Stadion, Eindhoven, the Netherlands. It was won by PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands, who defeated Bastia of France by an aggregate result of 3–0 to claim their first UEFA Cup title. Playing in their first European final, PSV Eindhoven became the latest of the Grote Drie trio of big Dutch teams to win a European title.
