Liga Española De Baloncesto (1957–1983)
The Liga Española de Baloncesto (English language, English: Spanish Basketball League), whose top division was known as Primera División (English language, English: First Division), was the old Spanish basketball league system, 1st Tier level basketball league in Spain, from 1957 to the 1982–83 season. It was organized by the Spanish Basketball Federation, and it was contested by the best clubs of the country. In 1983, the clubs decided to create the Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto, Basketball Clubs Association, and transformed the top division into the new Liga ACB, although that league was also named Primera División until 1988. Format The league was played in a double Round-robin tournament, round-robin format without playoffs. Two points were conceded for a winning game, one for a draw, and no points for the loser. The Primera FEB, formerly known as LEB or LEB Oro, is the second basketball division of the Spanish basketball league system after the Liga ACB. It is run by the FEB. The FEB leagues are divided into three categories (the other two are the Segunda FEB and the Tercera FEB). The league was founded in 1996 and is played under FIBA rules. The league is contested by 18 clubs. Each season, the top-finishing team in the Primera FEB are automatically promoted to the Liga ACB. The teams that finish the season in 2nd to 9th place enter a playoff tournament, with the winner also gaining promotion to the Liga ACB. The three lowest-finishing teams in the Primera FEB are relegated to Segunda FEB. A total of 81 teams have competed in Primera FEB since its inception in 1996. 19 teams have been crowned champions and 30 teams have gained promotion to Liga ACB, of which only four teams could not play in Liga ACB. Ed Lee Johnson (June 17, 1944 – April 5, 2016) was an American professional basketball player. After a collegiate career at Tennessee State University, Johnson was selected in both the 1968 ABA draft and 1968 NBA draft. In a career that spanned 12 seasons, Johnson played in the original American Basketball Association, Continental Basketball Association, and some of the top leagues in Spain and France. He was named the most valuable player of the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA) and a member of the All-EBA First Team in 1973. Reactions to his death On 2 May 2016, the Town Hall of Gijón, where he lived during 27 years, renamed in his honour the central court of the Municipal Palacio de Deportes. Walter Szczerbiak Sr. (born Wolodymir Szczerbiak, August 21, 1949) is an American former professional basketball player. At , Szczerbiak played at the small forward position.
