1973–74 National Basketball League Season
The 1973–74 Clarks Men's Shoes National Basketball League season was the second season of the newly formulated National Basketball League. The league and cup was sponsored by Clarks Men's Shoes and the number of teams increased to eight. The Avenue club moved from Leyton to Edmonton and the Sutton club merged with Crystal Palace. Four new teams appeared in the form of the Doncaster Panthers, the Manchester Giants and two more London based teams the Islington & London Latvian Embassy All-Stars and the London YMCA Metros. The Sutton & Crystal Palace team completed the double of National League and Cup beginning what would soon be a dynasty for the Crystal Palace team. There were no playoffs for the League during this era and an American called Jim Guymon was the season MVP. It forms levels 2 to 5 on the British basketball pyramid, in line with the Scottish Basketball Championship, sitting directly below the top tier competition, Super League Basketball. British Basketball League
The British Basketball League (BBL) was a men's professional basketball sports league, league in Great Britain. Since its establishment in 1987 the BBL represented the highest level of basketball competition within the United Kingdom. The organisation that operated the competition, Basketball League Limited, folded in July 2024 after the British Basketball Federation terminated its operating license. It was succeeded as the top-level men's basketball competition with Super League Basketball. The BBL operated as a Franchising, franchise model where each member team is located within a separate franchise area. Ian Day
Ian Douglas Day (9 February 1935 – 30 June 2025) was an Australian rules footballer who played for West Adelaide between 1952 and 1960, and South Adelaide between 1961 and 1964. He captained the team in 1963 and played in the 1964 Grand Final premiership under captain Neil Kerley, which was the last premiership to be won by South Adelaide. Following his retirement from football, Day moved into the media, where he became a highly respected sports presenter and football commentator in Adelaide. In 2017, he was inducted into the Adelaide Oval Media Hall of Fame. Playing career An accomplished and combative rover, Ian Day gave good service to two league clubs in a 12-season career at the top level.
