1973–74 DDR-Oberliga
The 1973–74 DDR-Oberliga was the 25th season of the DDR-Oberliga, the first tier of league football in East Germany. The league was contested by fourteen teams. 1. FC Magdeburg won the championship, the club's second of three East German championships. During the season Magdeburg also won the 1973–74 European Cup Winners' Cup. Hans-Bert Matoul of 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig was the league's top scorer with 20 goals, while Bernd Bransch of FC Carl Zeiss Jena won the seasons East German Footballer of the year award. On the strength of the 1973–74 title Magdeburg qualified for the 1974–75 European Cup where the club was knocked out by Bundesliga champions FC Bayern Munich in the second round. DDR-Oberliga
The DDR-Oberliga (English: ''East German Premier League'' or ''GDR Premier League'') was the top-level association football league in East Germany. Overview Following World War II, separate sports competitions emerged in the Allied-occupied Germany, occupied eastern and western halves of Germany, replacing the ''Gauligas'' of the Nazism, Nazi era. In East Germany, a top-flight football competition, the highest league in the East German football league system, was established in 1949 as the DS-Oberliga (''Deutscher Sportausschuss Oberliga'', German Sports Association Upper League). Bernd Bransch
Bernd Bransch (24 September 1944 – 11 June 2022) was a footballer from East Germany who played as a sweeper. Career Bransch began his sporting career as a youngster at BSG Motor Halle-Süd. The son of a locksmith was then allowed to join sports club SC Chemie Halle in 1954. Bransch played throughout his career for SC Chemie Halle and its successor, Hallescher FC Chemie – except for the 1973/74 season, in which he played for FC Carl Zeiss Jena. In 1968 and 1974 he was honoured as East German Footballer of the Year. Bransch participated in the Munich Olympics 1972, in which his East German team secured a bronze medal, and in the gold-medal winning Montreal Olympics 1976 side. BSG Stahl Riesa is a German association football club from Riesa in Saxony. History The club was founded as ''SC Riesa'' in 1903 in the cellar of the local pub "Bodega" and was renamed ''Riesaer SV'' two years later. In 1917, they fused with ''FC Wettin'' and went on to play quietly as a local club until 1936 when they advanced to the Gauliga Sachsen, one of sixteen divisions in the top flight of German football during the Third Reich. The FDGB-Pokal (Freier Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund Pokal or Free German Trade Union Federation Cup) was an elimination football tournament held annually in East Germany. It was the second most important national title in East German football after the DDR-Oberliga championship. The founder of the competition was East Germany's major trade union. East Germany–West Germany Football Rivalry
The rivalry between football teams from East Germany and West Germany lasted from 1949 to 1990. Clubs from the two countries met at official level in both national team and club competitions like the FIFA World Cup and European Cup. While the West Germany national team received strong support in East Germany, with supporters from the East often travelling to away matches of the West German team in Eastern Europe, encounters between teams from the East and West in European Cup competitions were often hard-fought. East Germany's 1–0 victory over West Germany in the 1974 FIFA World Cup was the only game between the two national teams.
