1972–73 Southern Africa Tour
The 1972–73 Southern Africa Tour was the second season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Season outline The first event of the season was the Luyt Lager PGA Championship in November 1972. In the third round, Harold Henning "romped to a five stroke lead." In the final round, Hugh Baiocchi shot a five-under-par 65 to get into contention. However, Henning managed to secure a one shot win. Gary Player recorded a third-place result. However, Player came back and won the following week at the Dunlop South African Masters with a 268 total, defeating Henning by one shot. It was his third straight win at the event. In addition, at the Dunlop South African Masters, Bobby Cole recorded a joint third place finish. This precipitated much success for Cole over the next month. On 9 December, he won the Natal Open. Dale Hayes
Dale Hayes (born 1 July 1952) is a South African professional golfer. Amateur career Hayes won the 15–17 Boys category at the Junior World Golf Championships in 1969. Professional career In 1970, Hayes turned professional. On December 6, 1971, Hayes won the Bert Hagerman Invitational on his 19th birthday, his first win on tour. Overall, Hayes won more than a dozen events in South Africa, leading the Southern African Tour's Order of Merit in 1972/73. He also finished as runner up on the Order of Merit in 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1979. In 1974, he won the World Cup of Golf for South Africa in partnership with Bobby Cole (golfer), Bobby Cole. In 1971, Hayes won the Spanish Open at the age of 18 years. In 1973, he was fourth on the European Tour Order of Merit, improving to second in 1974 and first in 1975. Sunshine Tour Seasons
Sunlight is the portion of the electromagnetic radiation which is emitted by the Sun (i.e. solar radiation) and received by the Earth, in particular the visible light perceptible to the human eye as well as invisible infrared (typically perceived by humans as warmth) and ultraviolet (which can have physiological effects such as sunburn) lights. Graham Henning
Graham Henning was a South African professional golfer. In the late 1960s and early 70s Henning was briefly one of the top golfers in South Africa. He recorded several 1st and 2nd place finishes in top international events across Europe and Africa. This excellent play helped him qualify for South Africa's 1969 World Cup team. Early life Henning was born into a golfing family. His brothers Allan, Brian, and Harold all became professional golfers. Professional career Henning's first top performance on the international stage was at the 1967 Engadine Open. After opening with an even par 70 Henning fired consecutive rounds of 67 and 66 to get into contention. As the final round started he was at −7, one back of Australia's Randall Vines. Henning fired an astonishing final round 62 to outplay Vines by 11 and win by 10 strokes. Two years later, in 1969, he would play excellently on the international circuit. Bob Charles (golfer)
Sir Robert James Charles (born 14 March 1936) is a New Zealand professional golfer who won the 1963 Open Championship, the first left-handed player to win a major championship. He won the 1954 New Zealand Open as an 18-year-old amateur and made the cut in the same event in 2007, at the age of 71. His achievements over that period, in which he won 80 tournaments, rank him as one of the most successful New Zealand golfers of all time. Along with Michael Campbell, he is one of only two New Zealanders to win a men's major golf championship. Charles turned professional in late 1960 and for the next two years had some success in tournaments around the world. From 1963 until the mid-1970s he played mostly on the PGA Tour. BP South African Open
The South African Open is one of the oldest national open golf championships in the world, having first been played in 1903, and is one of the principal tournaments on the Southern-Africa-based Sunshine Tour. Since 1997 it has also been co-sanctioned by the European Tour. History The first formal event was organised in 1903, following a series of exhibition matches that had been held over the preceding ten years. The championship was initially contested over just 36 holes until 1908, when it was extended to become a 72-hole tournament. Although non-whites had played in the South African Open before, most notably when Papwa Sewgolum finished second in 1963, it was not until 1972 that black golfers were allowed to compete. The South African rand, or simply the rand, (currency sign, sign: R; ISO 4217, code: ZAR) is the official currency of South Africa.
