Luxembourg National Division
The National Division (, , ), known as the BGL Ligue for sponsorship reasons, is the highest association football, football league in Luxembourg. Until 2011, it was known as the BGL Ligue, after the Luxembourg Football Federation managed to seal a sponsorship deal with Fortis (finance), Fortis. Before 2006, it contained twelve teams, but it expanded to fourteen for the 2006–07 Luxembourg National Division, 2006–07 season. Following the abandonment of the previous season, the 2020–21 Luxembourg National Division, 2020–21 season saw the further expansion of the league to 16 teams. The current champions are Differdange 03. The competition was first held in 1909–10 Luxembourg National Division, 1909–10, and has been held every year since, with the exceptions of 1912–13 and four seasons during the Second World War. US Rumelange
Union Sportive Rumelange, usually abbreviated to US Rumelange, is a football club, based in Rumelange, in south-western Luxembourg. History In the 2005–2006 season, Rumelange finished eleventh in the National Division. It was almost impossible for Rumelange to avoid fourth place, and they were pitted against FC Mamer in a relegation play-off. Rumelange lost on penalties, and were relegated to the Division of Honour. They won promotion to the highest level again at the end of the 2007–2008 season. Sporting Club Bettembourg
SC Bettembourg is a football club based in Bettembourg, Luxembourg. History The club was founded in 1927 as Sporting Club Bettemburg. After the German occupation of Luxembourg in 1940, it was renamed FK 1927 Bettemburg and four years later it was renamed back to its original name. In the 1947–48 and 1972–73 seasons, SC Bettembourg played in the highest Luxembourg league, Luxembourg National Division, for one season each. After relegation in 1973, the club moved between the honorary promotion and the fourth-tier 2nd Division. In 2024, the club managed to return to the top division after 51 years, four match days before the end of the season. F.C. Schëffleng 95 or FC Schifflange 95 is a football club in Schifflange, Luxembourg. It was founded in 1995. They play in the First Tier- BGL Ligue, after being promoted from the Division of Honour after the 2022–23 season. They play their home games at the Stade Rue Denis Netgen. History FC Schifflange 95 is the result of a merger between former Schifflange sides ''Amis des Sports'' (founded in 1936) and ''National Schifflange'' (founded in 1912). National Schifflange was a one-time Luxembourg champion after winning the 1951–52 Luxembourg National Division. National also won the 1960 Luxembourg Cup. CA Spora Luxembourg was a football club, based in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. It is now a part of Racing FC Union Luxembourg. History Spora was founded in 1923 as an amalgam of Racing Club Luxembourg and Sporting Club Luxembourg, two of the leading lights of early Luxembourgish football. For the first seventeen years of existence, Spora would battle with FA Red Boys Differdange for ultimate ascendancy in Luxembourgish football. Although Red Boys won more trophies in this period, Spora picked up almost every piece of silverware that Red Boys didn't, with seven league titles and three Luxembourg Cups in just fifteen years. During the German occupation of Luxembourg, the club played in the Gauliga Moselland under the name of ''Moselland Luxemburg''. Football Club Avenir Beggen is a football club, based in Beggen, a quarter of Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. The club were founded in 1915 as FC Daring Beggen but changed their name to FC Avenir Beggen a year later. In 1940, they were renamed SV 1915 Beggen, but in 1944, it was changed again to FC Avenir Beggen. Avenir Beggen had played in the National Division in consecutive seasons since 1965–66, but were relegated in the 2005–06 season. Finishing second in their first season in the second-tier Division of Honour, Avenir returned to the National Division at the first time of asking. In 2008/09 the club finished 14th and were relegated back to the Luxembourg Division of Honour. Jeunesse Esch (full name ''Association Sportive la Jeunesse d'Esch/Alzette'') is a professional football club based in Esch-sur-Alzette, in south-western Luxembourg. The side play in the National Division, the highest league in the country, and have won the league title on 28 occasions between 1921 and 2010, the most of any team in Luxembourg. History The club was founded in 1907 as Jeunesse la Frontière d'Esch in reference to the proximity of their stadium to the border with France. "La frontière" was dropped to give the club its current name in 1918, which it retained until World War II, where the Nazi regime implemented the German name SV Schwarz-Weiß 07 Esch and the club had to play in the '' Gauliga Moselland'', finishing runners-up in the 1943–44 season. Football Association Red Boys Differdange was a football club, based in Differdange, in south-western Luxembourg. It is now a part of FC Differdange 03. History Red Boys was founded as ''SC Differdange'' in 1907, the year after Luxembourg's first club, Fola Esch, had been set up. Despite the clubs provenance, its first appearance in Luxembourg's league as Red Boys Differdange came only in 1919 (and, then, only in the second division). Soon, though, Red Boys would embark upon the greatest runs of success in Luxembourgish football. During the 1920s and 1930s, Red Boys competed with Spora Luxembourg for dominance of Luxembourgish football. Red Boys was the more successful of the two, and won thirteen trophies in as many years between 1923 and 1936.
