1972 Wimbledon Championships – Mixed Doubles
Owen Davidson and Billie Jean King were the defending champions, but Davidson did not compete. King partnered with Clark Graebner but lost in the semifinals to Ilie Năstase and Rosie Casals. Năstase and Casals defeated Kim Warwick and Evonne Goolagong in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the mixed doubles tennis title at the 1972 Wimbledon Championships. Ilie Năstase
Ilie Theodoriu Năstase (; born 19 July 1946) is a Romanian former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the inaugural world No. 1 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 40 weeks. Năstase is one of ten players to have won over 100 total ATP-level titles, with 64 in singles and 45 in doubles, among which seven majors: two in singles, three in men's doubles and two in mixed doubles. He also won four Masters Grand Prix year-end championships. He was the first professional sports figure to sign an endorsement contract with Nike, doing so in 1972. Năstase also wrote several novels in French in the 1980s, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1991. Patricia Faulkner (born 28 August 1945) is an Australian-American former professional tennis player. Biography Born in Sydney, Faulkner is the daughter of St. George rugby union player Terry McClenaughan, who later served as team manager for the Wallabies. Richard Russell (tennis)
Richard Russell (8 September 1945 – 15 January 2025) was a Jamaican professional tennis player. Life and career Russell was the only Jamaican to progress past the first round at all four grand slam tournaments. At the 1966 Australian Championships he won his first round match over Richie Chopra, 6–0, 6–0, 6–0. In July 1965 he won the singles title at the All-Jamaica Tennis Championships for the second time. Russell won the 1966 Kingston International Championships at Kingston, Jamaica defeating Arthur Ashe in the final in three sets. This was an annual tournament on the international ILTF Caribbean Circuit and Russell would be the only Jamaican to win the event. Winnie Shaw
Winifred Mason Shaw (later Mrs. Wooldridge) (18 January 1947 – 30 March 1992) was a professional tennis player from Scotland whose career ran from the mid-1960s until the late 70s. In 2002, she was posthumously inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. She was active from 1963 to 1978 and contested 56 career singles finals winning 28 titles. Keith Wooldridge
Keith Wooldridge (born 24 October 1943) is a former professional tennis player from the United Kingdom who was active in the 1960s. He was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England. His best singles result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round at Wimbledon in 1964 and 1966. He also reached the third round at the Australian Championships in 1963, but this was due to two walkovers in the first rounds. Wooldridge won the Surrey Championships on grass in 1966 defeating Peter Curtis in the final and the same tournament again in 1968 defeating Ken Fletcher in the final. Kristy Pigeon (born August 12, 1950) is an American retired tennis player who was active at the end of the 1960s and beginning of the 1970s. George Lansing "Butch" Seewagen (born June 13, 1946) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography He was born in New York City on June 13, 1946, to George and Clella Seewagen. His father was the tennis coach at St. John’s University and a former player, who played against Don Budge at the 1936 U.S. National Championships.
