1972 Bahamian General Election
General elections were held in the Bahamas on 19 September 1972. The result was a victory for the Progressive Liberal Party, which won 57.9% of the vote and 29 of the 38 seats.Colin A. The Bahamas, officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is an archipelagic and island country within the Lucayan Archipelago of the Atlantic Ocean. It contains 97 per cent of the archipelago's land area and 88 per cent of its population. It comprises more than 3,000 islands, cays and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, and is located north of Cuba and north-west of the island of Hispaniola (split between the Dominican Republic and Haiti) and the Turks and Caicos Islands, southeast of the U.S. state of Florida and east of the Florida Keys. Kendal Isaacs
Sir Kendal George Lamon Isaacs, (23 July 1925 – 25 May 1996) was a notable Bahamian lawyer and politician. He served as Leader of the Opposition for much of the 1980s. Early life and education Born and raised in Nassau, Isaacs attended Government High School in Nassau where he was captain of Montague House. Isaacs served in the North Caribbean Force during World War II and then went to England to study law. He received a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Queens' College, Cambridge, in 1949 and a Master of Arts in 1953. Legal career Isaacs was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales at the Middle Temple in 1946. In 1961, Isaacs was appointed Solicitor-General of the Bahamas; a post in which he served until 1963 when he became the country's Attorney-General. Clifford Darling
Sir Clifford Darling (6 February 1922 – 27 December 2011) was the fifth governor-general of the Bahamas from 2 January 1992 until his retirement on 2 January 1995. Early life and education Clifford Darling was born on 6 February 1922, on Acklins Island to Charles and Aremilia Darling, He attended Acklins Public School and schools in New Providence. Darling trained as an electrician and a barber. He migrated to Nassau before going on the Contract. Trade unionist Darling returned to Nassau, got a job as a taxicab driver, and became an influential labor leader, serving as general secretary and president of the Bahamas Taxicab Union. In the 1950s, Darling led successful negotiations for improved conditions for taxi drivers, culminating in the pivotal 1958 general strike. George Mackey
George Whitelaw Mackey (February 1, 1916 – March 15, 2006) was an American mathematician known for his contributions to quantum logic, representation theory, and noncommutative geometry. Career Mackey earned his B.A. at Rice University in 1938 and obtained his Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1942 under the direction of Marshall H. Stone. He joined the Harvard University Mathematics Department in 1943, was appointed Landon T. Clay Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Science in 1969 and remained there until he retired in 1985. Work Earlier in his career Mackey did significant work in the duality theory of locally convex spaces, which provided tools for subsequent work in this area, including Alexander Grothendieck's work on topological tensor products. Milo Butler
Sir Milo Boughton Butler (11 August 190622 January 1979) was a Bahamian politician who served as the second governor-general of the Bahamas from 1973 to 1979. He died in office, aged 72. Early life and family Butler was born in Nassau, The Bahamas on 11 August 1905 to George Raleigh Butler and his wife Frances. He attended the George Washington School in Florida, the public school at Rum Cay, and the Boys' Central School in Nassau. At age 17, Butler began his own grocery business. On 14 October 1928, Butler married Caroline Loretta Watson. They had seven sons and three daughters. Career and death Butler entered electoral politics in 1936 as a member of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), when he unsuccessfully ran against Sir Harry Oakes in the Western District of New Providence.
