Crystal Palace National Sports Centre
The National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace, London, Crystal Palace in south London, England is a large sports centre and outdoor Sport of athletics, athletics stadium. It was opened in 1964 in Crystal Palace Park, close to the site of the former The Crystal Palace, Crystal Palace Exhibition building which had been destroyed by fire in 1936, and is on the same site as the former FA Cup Final venue which was used here between 1895 and 1914. It was one of the five National Sports Centres, run on behalf of Sport England, but responsibility was transferred to the London Development Agency (now GLA Land and Property) and is managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited, under their Better brand logo. David Jenkins (sprinter)
David Andrew Jenkins (born 25 May 1952) is a former World ranked no.1 track and field 400 metres runner and statistically is the highest ranking Scottish sprinter in history. He was part of the British relay team which won a silver medal at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics. In 1988, he received a 7-year prison sentence for drug smuggling, but was able to serve a reduced sentence by becoming an informant. Early life and education Born in Pointe-à-Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago, British West Indies, Jenkins was the son of an oil refinery manager. Ian Stewart (runner)
Ian Stewart MBE (born 15 January 1949) is a Scottish former long-distance running athlete. Stewart was one of the world's leading distance runners between the late 1960s and mid-1970s. Stewart won the bronze medal in the Men's 5000 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich (a race won by Lasse Virén). Stewart also won the following championships: European 5,000 metres (1969), Commonwealth 5,000 metres (1970), European Indoor (1969 and 1975) and World Cross Country (1975). Biography In 1965, at 16 years of age, he ran a British age best of 9.12.8 for 2 miles and two years later set a European junior 3 miles record of 13.39.8. Ian McCafferty
Ian John McCafferty (born 24 November 1944) is a Scottish former long-distance runner. He won the silver medal at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Biography McCafferty finished second behind Australian Ron Clarke and Hungarian Lajos Mecser in the 3 miles event at the 1967 AAA Championships and by virtue of being the highest placed British athlete was considered the British 3 miles champion. The U.S. magazine Track & Field News' annual world rankings ranked McCafferty fifth at 5000 metres in 1967. McCafferty became the third fastest British miler of all time in 1969. The following year he represented Scotland at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in his home county. David Bedford (runner)
David Colin Bedford OBE (born 30 December 1949) is an English former long-distance runner, whose athletic career spanned the early 1970s. Post-retirement, he served as race director of the London Marathon until 2012, and is the Chairman of the IAAF Road Running Commission (since 2012), as well as sitting on the IAAF Cross Country Committee as the UK Athletics elected representative. Bedford held the 10,000 metres world record, improving it by 7.6 seconds with his time of 27 minutes 30.80 seconds in 1973. He also held the British records for 3000 m steeplechase and 5000 metres. He usually ran in distinctive red socks, which combined with his distinctive moustache later led to a well publicised dispute about the use of similarly attired runners in advertisements. List Of British Champions In 5000 Metres
The British 5,000 metres athletics champions covers four competitions; the current British Athletics Championships which was founded in 2007, the preceding AAA Championships (1880-2006), the Amateur Athletic Club Championships (1866-1879) and finally the UK Athletics Championships which existed from 1977 until 1997 and ran concurrently with the AAA Championships. The distance was originally 4 miles but in 1932 switched to 3 miles. John Christopher Kirkbride (born 24 March 1947) is a British retired international middle-distance runner who competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Biography Kirkbride finished second behind Walter Wilkinson in the 1500 metres event at the 1970 AAA Championships. Peter John Stewart (born 8 August 1947) is a British male former middle-distance runner. His greatest achievement was a gold medal in the 3000 metres at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1971. Colin William Ashburner Campbell (20 June 1946 – 23 December 2024) was a British sportsman, who competed in track and field athletics and in the bobsled. He competed for Great Britain in the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics, before moving to bobsled and competing at the 1976 Winter Olympics, becoming one of only a handful of British athletes to compete at both the Summer and Winter games. David Cropper (26 December 1945 – 3 December 2016) was a British middle-distance runner. He competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics and the 1972 Summer Olympics. Andrew William Carter (born 29 January 1949) is a male British retired track and field athlete who competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Biography Carter became the British 800 metres champion after winning the British AAA Championships title at the 1970 AAA Championships.
