1971–72 Southern Africa Tour
The 1971–72 Southern Africa Tour was the inaugural season of the Southern Africa Tour, the main professional golf tour in South Africa since it was formed in 1971. Season outline According to ''The Guardian'', South Africa's Tienie Britz was "the season's most successful player" though England's Peter Oosterhuis often contended. At the inaugural event, the Luyt Lager PGA Championship, Britz, Oosterhuis, and Rhodesia's Don Gammon finished regulation tied at 280. Britz won the 18-hole playoff, scoring a 67 against Oosterhuis' 70 and Gammon's 71. At the third tournament, the Schoeman Park Open, Oosterhuis was "well placed to win," possessing a three shot lead entering the final round. He shot over-par in the final round though still finished second. The following week, meanwhile, Oosterhuis finally triumphed, defeating Britz by two shots at the Rhodesian Dunlop Masters. Gary James Player (born 1 November 1935) is a South African retired professional golfer who is widely considered to be one of the greatest golfers of all time. During his career, Player won nine major championships on the regular tour and nine major championships on the Champions Tour. At the age of 29, Player won the 1965 U.S. Open and became the first non-American to win all four majors in a career, known as the career Grand Slam. At the time, he was the youngest player to do this, though Jack Nicklaus (26) and Tiger Woods (24) subsequently broke this record. Hugh John Baiocchi (born 17 August 1946) is a South African professional golfer who has won more than 20 professional tournaments around the world. Early life Baiocchi was born in Johannesburg. Professional career In 1971, Baiocchi turned professional and spent his regular career playing mainly in Europe. He was a member of the European Tour from its first season in 1972 until 1993 and made the top one hundred on the Order of Merit for the Tour's first nineteen seasons, including three top ten placings: 1973 (3rd); 1975 (6th) and 1977 (2nd). The Natal Open was a golf tournament in South Africa. It was organised by the Natal Golf Union and ran from 1925 through to 1975. In latter years it was included within the Southern African Tour's Order of Merit. During the mid-20th century, major champions Bobby Locke and Gary Player had much success, winning several times each. In the 1960s, the tournament received international media coverage as Sewsunker Sewgolum, a colored golfer, controversially was allowed to enter the event and won it twice. Dunlop South African Masters
The South African Masters was one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the Sunshine Tour. It was last played in 2011. Before its discontinuation, it had a prize fund of 1.2 million rand and was held at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club on the KwaZulu-Natal border, South Africa. History The tournament had its roots in the South African Professional Match Play Championship, the running of which was taken over by the PGA of South Africa in 1957. Under the sponsorship of Dunlop the event transitioned into a 72-hole stroke play event in 1960. The first edition of the new Dunlop Masters, at Houghton Golf Club in 1960, was won by Gary Player with an aggregate score of 266, a record that stood for 44 years. The Western Province Open was a golf tournament in South Africa as part of the Southern Africa Tour. In the early years of the tournament, Bobby Locke and Harold Henning had much success, winning the event multiple times each. During the middle and later phase of the tournament legend Gary Player had much success, ultimately winning the event five times. History Bobby Locke, Gary Player, Harold Henning, and Bobby Verwey had the most success in the early years of the tournament. In 1956, Locke was victorious, defeating Australia's Peter Thomson by two shots. A young Gary Player finished solo third. Robert Eric Cole (born 11 May 1948) is a South African professional golfer. Early life Cole was born in Springs, South Africa. After suffering a bicycle accident related knee injury, Cole took up golf at the age of eleven. He grew up playing golf on the course maintained for employees of the gold mine where his father, James Cole, worked. As a child, he was influenced by the careers of Bobby Locke and Gary Player. He won both the South Africa junior golf championship and the Vaal Amateur. Amateur career In 1966, Cole won the British Amateur at Carnoustie, Scotland, at age 18, the youngest winner to that stage. Jonathan Adriaan Fourie (born 23 August 1939) is a South African professional golfer. Early life Fourie was born in Johannesburg. Professional career In 1970, Fourie turned professional. He spent his career playing mainly on the Southern Africa Tour and the European Tour. He won ten times on the Southern Africa Tour, including one win as an amateur, and led the Order of Merit in 1973/74. In Europe, he won the 1977 Callers of Newcastle tournament and twice finished in the top twenty on the Order of Merit. Early life Westbrook lost his left hand's middle finger and a large portion of his left thumb in a childhood accident. Despite this he managed to become a professional golfer. Dale Hayes (born 1 July 1952) is a South African professional golfer. Amateur career Hayes won the 15–17 Boys category at the Junior World Golf Championships in 1969.
