1971–72 Iowa State Cyclones Men's Basketball Team
The 1971–72 Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball team represented Iowa State University during the 1971–72 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Cyclones were coached by Maury John, who was in his first season with the Cyclones. They played their home games at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Hilton Coliseum hosted its first Iowa State men's basketball game on December 2, a 71–54 win over Arizona. They finished the season 12–14, 5–9 in Big Eight play to finish in sixth place. Maury John
Maurice E. John (June 17, 1919 – October 15, 1974) was an American college basketball coach at Drake University and Iowa State University. John is the all–time wins leader at Drake and led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Final Four in 1969. In his 28-year coaching career, John had a 528–214 record. John died of cancer at age 55 in 1974, while coaching at Iowa State. Early life John was born June 17, 1919, in Sweet Springs, Missouri. He attended William Jewell College for two years before transferring to Central Missouri State, graduating in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in education. The 1971–72 UCLA Bruins men's basketball team won the 1972 NCAA University Division basketball tournament, National Collegiate Championship on March 25, 1972, in the Los Angeles Sports Arena with an 81–76 victory over Florida State Seminoles men's basketball, Florida State. It was the sixth consecutive championship (and eighth in nine years) under John Wooden, in his 25th year as head coach at UCLA. This was the final year that the national championship game was played on Saturday. The 1971–72 Bruins had an undefeated record of 30–0, winning by an average margin of over thirty points.
