1971–72 In Belgian Football
The 1971–72 season was the 69th season of competitive football in Belgium. RSC Anderlechtois won their 15th Division I title and made the double by beating Standard Club Liégeois in the Belgian Cup final (1-0). Standard Club Liégeois reached the quarter-finals of the 1971–72 European Champion Clubs' Cup and K Lierse SK the quarter-finals of the first ever UEFA Cup. The Belgium national football team qualified for the first time for the European Championship finals, by finishing first of their group and by beating Italy in the second qualifying round. Belgium was subsequently chosen to host the finals, of which they finished 3rd. Estádio da Luz (, Stadium of Light), officially named Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, was a multi-purpose stadium located in Lisbon, Portugal. It was used mostly for football matches and hosted the home matches of S.L. Benfica and the Portugal national team. The stadium was opened on 1 December 1954 and it was able to hold an official maximum of 120,000 people, making it the largest stadium in Europe and the third largest in the world in terms of capacity. Erwin Vandendaele
Erwin Vandendaele (born 5 March 1945) is a Belgian former professional footballer who won the Belgian Golden Shoe in 1971 while at Club Brugge. He played 32 times for the Belgium national team between 1970 and 1977, starting in a 2–1 friendly defeat to France on 15 November 1970. In the summer of 1974 Vandendaele moved to the rival Anderlecht. In 1976, he won the UEFA Super Cup with Anderlecht after a 4–1 win in the second leg over Bayern Munich. After his football career, Vandendaele founded a tennis club in his hometown Asper. Since 2005, he has been working as a talent scout for Gent. Belgian Second Division
The Belgian Second Division was the second-highest division in the Belgian football league system, one level below the Belgian Pro League. It was founded by the Royal Belgian Football Association in 1909 and folded in 2016, when it was replaced by the Belgian First Division B (known as the Proximus League for sponsorship reasons)). The 1974 FIFA World Cup was the 10th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial Association football, football tournament for men's senior national teams, and was played in West Germany (and West Berlin) between 13 June and 7 July.
