Crystal Palace National Sports Centre
The National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace, London, Crystal Palace in south London, England is a large sports centre and outdoor Sport of athletics, athletics stadium. It was opened in 1964 in Crystal Palace Park, close to the site of the former The Crystal Palace, Crystal Palace Exhibition building which had been destroyed by fire in 1936, and is on the same site as the former FA Cup Final venue which was used here between 1895 and 1914. It was one of the five National Sports Centres, run on behalf of Sport England, but responsibility was transferred to the London Development Agency (now GLA Land and Property) and is managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited, under their Better brand logo. Bronwen Cardy
Bronwen Wise née Cardy (born 26 January 1952) is a British retired long-distance runner. She competed in the half marathon for Britain at the 1993 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships and was a regular winner of British half marathons during the 1980s and 1990s. Biography Cardy was a member of Bromsgrove & Redditch Athletic Club and finished second behind Joyce Smith in the 3,000 metres event at the 1971 WAAA Championships. She won many British domestic races during the eighties and nineties which led in 1993 to selection for the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. In a British team which included Suzanne Rigg, Marian Sutton, Sue Dilnot, Teresa Dyer she finished 59th in a time of 1:16:33. Joyce Smith
Joyce Esther Smith (née Byatt, born 26 October 1937) is a British former long-distance runner. She broke the world record in the 3000 metres in 1971 and is a three-time medallist at the International/World Cross Country Championships, including winning in 1972. She went on to twice win the London Marathon, becoming the first British woman in history to run under 2:30 when winning in 1981 with 2:29:57, before further improving the British record to 2:29:43 when winning in 1982. She also competed in the 1500 metres at the 1972 Munich Olympics and finished 11th in the marathon at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, aged 46. Sheila Carey
Sheila Janet Carey MBE, (née Taylor; born 12 August 1946) is a British retired middle-distance runner who represented the United Kingdom at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1968, she placed fourth in the 800 metres, while in 1972, she finishing fifth in the 1500 metres, setting a new British record. She represented England at the Commonwealth Games in 1970 and 1974. She was also part of the British 4×800 metres relay team that twice broke the world record in 1970. Biography At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Carey (competing under her maiden name of Taylor) placed fourth in the 800 metres. Joan Allison
Joan Florence Page née Allison OBE (born 10 June 1947) is a retired British international middle-distance runner. Biography Allison competed in the women's 800 metres at the 1968 Summer Olympics. She represented England and won a silver medal in the 1,500 metres, at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. Allison finished second behind Rita Ridley in the 1500 metres event at the 1971 WAAA Championships. Allison became the British 1500 metres champion after winning the British WAAA Championships title at the 1973 WAAA Championships. The following year, Allison won a second silver medal in the 1,500 metres and finished fourth in the 800 metres at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand. Rita Ridley
Rita Ridley (née Lincoln; 4 November 1946 – 12 February 2013) was an English middle- and long-distance runner. Biography Lincoln started in athletics at school in Essex with her twin sister Iris. On 3 July at the 1965 WAAA Championships, aged 18, she finished second to Joyce Smith in the mile race at the WAAA Championships. The following year Lincoln became the national mile champion after winning the British WAAA Championships title at the 1966 WAAA Championships, in a championship record time of 4:47.9. She retained the national mile title at the 1967 WAAA Championships and the 1968 WAAA Championships (although the mile was now called the 1500 metres.
