Ekstraklasa
(; meaning "Extra Class" in Polish), officially known as PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa due to its Sponsor (commercial), sponsorship by PKO Bank Polski, is a professional association football league in Poland and the highest level of the Polish football league system. Contested by 18 clubs, operating a system of promotion and relegation with the I liga, seasons start in July, and end in May or June the following year. Teams play a total of 34 games each. Games are played on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. The winner of the qualifies for the Polish Super Cup. Since 2005, the league is operated by the S.A. (corporation), Spółka Akcyjna. Stal Rzeszów is a Polish Association football, football club based in Rzeszów, Poland, as part of a Stal Rzeszów (multi-sports club), multi-sports club. They currently compete in the I liga, the second tier of Polish league football. History The history of Stal Rzeszów dates back to November 1944, when a group of sports enthusiasts, working at ''WSK Państwowe Zakłady Lotnicze, PZL Rzeszów'' (''Transport Equipment Enterprise'') decided to form a ''Sports Circle''. Janusz Żmijewski
Janusz Henryk Żmijewski (born 4 March 1943) is a Polish former professional footballer who played as a forward. Playing career Born in Radzymin in the Masovian Voivodeship, he spent most of his career with Legia Warsaw. After his tenure with Legia he had stints with Ruch Chorzów, Avia Świdnik, A.A.C. Eagles, Polonia Warsaw, MKP Pogoń Siedlce, and KS Piaseczno. When he finished off his career in Poland he went overseas to Canada to sign with the Toronto Falcons of the National Soccer League. During his tenure with Toronto he won the NSL Championship in 1980. He concluded his career with local amateur clubs like Toronto Polonia, Hamilton Legion, and Mississauga Polonia. Eugeniusz Lerch
Eugeniusz Lerch (15 February 1939 – 20 January 2024) was a Polish football forward best known for his time at his hometown club Ruch Chorzów. After retirement, he went on to coaching. Lerch featured in 294 matches in the Poland's highest league. He scored 106 goals during his career, representing both Ruch Chorzów and ROW Rybnik. Notably, Lerch won the Polish Championship with Ruch in 1960. He spent the last years of his career in Australia before retiring in 1976. Lerch cited Gerard Cieślik as his inspiration, first having seen Cieślik play at the Silesian Stadium when Lerch was aged 9, and Ruch hosted Garbarnia in a league match. Lerch died on 20 January 2024, at the age of 84. He was buried five days later at the cemetery on Dąbrowskiego Street in Chorzów. Robert Gadocha
Robert Gadocha (born 10 January 1946) is a Polish former professional footballer who played as a left winger. Gadocha, who started his career in Garbarnia Kraków. later also played for FC Nantes, and briefly in the United States for Chicago Sting, his last professional team. His departure to France happened when he was 29. In Poland it was forbidden for a long time to departure abroad to play football. He was the first Polish player to get a legal permission to move abroad to play football. He was a member of the Poland national team that won the gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, as well as a member of the team that finished third in the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany. Jan Banaś (born Hans Dieter Banas; 29 March 1943), nicknamed Bubi, is a Polish former professional footballer who played as a forward. He began his career as a youngster playing for AKS Mikołów (1956–59) before moving to Zryw Chorzów in 1959-62, Polonia Bytom (1962–69) and Górnik Zabrze (1969–75). Between his first call-up for Poland in 1964 and his last in 1973, he earned 31 caps, scoring seven goals (or eight, if the controversial goal in the 1973 win over England is credited to him). I liga (, ), currently named Betclic I liga due to its sponsorship by Betclic, is the men's second professional association football division of the Polish football league system, below the Ekstraklasa and above the II liga via promotion/relegation systems. It is run by the Polish Football Association (PZPN) since its inception on 30 May 1948. The league was renamed from Second League (II liga) to First League (I liga) in 2008.
