The Bahamas, officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is an archipelagic and island country within the Lucayan Archipelago of the Atlantic Ocean. It contains 97 per cent of the archipelago's land area and 88 per cent of its population. It comprises more than 3,000 islands, cays and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, and is located north of Cuba and north-west of the island of Hispaniola (split between the Dominican Republic and Haiti) and the Turks and Caicos Islands, southeast of the U.S. state of Florida and east of the Florida Keys. Geoffrey Johnstone
Sir Geoffrey Adams Dinwiddie Johnstone, (19 September 1927 – 4 August 2017) was a Bahamian politician and lawyer. Early life and education Johnstone was born in Nassau, Bahamas, on 19 September 1927, the eldest son of the late Bruce Eric Johnstone and Wilhelmina Helena Aline Johnstone née Kemp. He graduated from Queen's College secondary school, Nassau, Bahamas in September 1945 and began working an insurance agent for the British American Insurance Company. In 1947, he enrolled in the Inns of Court School of Law and was called to the Bar of England and Wales at the Middle Temple in June 1950. He was called to the Bahamas Bar in August 1950. Law career In August 1950, Johnstone joined the firm of Higgs & Johnson and was admitted to partnership in 1952. He became senior partner in 1968 and served in that capacity until his retirement in December 1998. Arthur Foulkes
Sir Arthur Alexander Foulkes, ON, GCMG (born 11 May 1928) is a politician who was the ninth governor-general of the Bahamas from 2010 to 2014. Foulkes was elected to the House of Assembly in 1967 and served in the government of Lynden Pindling as Minister of Communications and Minister of Tourism. In 1971, he was co-founder of the Free National Movement, and he was appointed to the Senate in 1972 and 1977 before returning to the House of Assembly in 1982. Sir Cecil Vincent Wallace Whitfield (20 March 1930 – 9 May 1990) was a Bahamian politician who was a founding member and the first leader of the Free National Movement political party. He also served as a Minister in the cabinet of Lynden Pindling from 1967 to 1970 and as a longtime member of the Bahamian Parliament. Early life Cecil Vincent Wallace Whitfield was born on 20 March 1930 in Nassau to Kenneth Whitfield and Dorothy Wallace. He studied at the Government High School. Milo Butler
Sir Milo Boughton Butler (11 August 190622 January 1979) was a Bahamian politician who served as the second governor-general of the Bahamas from 1973 to 1979. He died in office, aged 72. Early life and family Butler was born in Nassau, The Bahamas on 11 August 1905 to George Raleigh Butler and his wife Frances. He attended the George Washington School in Florida, the public school at Rum Cay, and the Boys' Central School in Nassau. At age 17, Butler began his own grocery business. On 14 October 1928, Butler married Caroline Loretta Watson. They had seven sons and three daughters. Career and death Butler entered electoral politics in 1936 as a member of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), when he unsuccessfully ran against Sir Harry Oakes in the Western District of New Providence.
