1967–68 Philadelphia 76ers Season
The 1967–68 season of the Philadelphia 76ers was the team's fifteenth season in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and its fifth season since moving from Syracuse, as well as its first season at its new home in South Philadelphia, the Spectrum. The 76ers finished the regular season with a record of 62–20, and for the third straight year had the best record in the entire NBA. Background During the playoffs, the Sixers eliminated the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, 4 games to 2. The series win proved costly, as Billy Cunningham, their sixth man, injured his non-shooting wrist and was out for the remainder of the playoffs. Alex Hannum
Alexander Murray Hannum (July 19, 1923 – January 18, 2002) was an American professional basketball player and coach. As a player, Hannum played for six different teams, most notably with the Milwaukee (later St. Louis) Hawks, where he played for three seasons. Midway through the 1956-57 season, Hannum was named player-coach of the Hawks with 31 games left in the season; the team reached the NBA Finals and lost in seven games. Hannum retired as a player after the season ended to focus on coaching. In the 1957-58 season, the Hawks won 41 games and won the Western Division again on their way to another matchup against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, where the Hawks won the championship in Game 6 for the championship—the only one in Hawks history. Hannum left the team in the offseason after a dispute with ownership but returned to the NBA to coach the Syracuse Nationals in 1960. The 1967–68 Seattle SuperSonics season was the inaugural season for the expansion Seattle SuperSonics franchise in the National Basketball Association. The team's official arena was the Seattle Center Coliseum. The 1967–68 NBA season was the Detroit Pistons' 20th season in the NBA and 11th season in the city of Detroit. The team played at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Expansion in the NBA, with new teams in San Diego and Seattle, forced the league to move to the deeper Eastern Conference. Still, Detroit improved significantly, finishing 40-42 (.488), 4th in the Eastern Division.
