1967 Davis Cup
The 1967 Davis Cup was the 56th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 32 teams entered the Europe Zone, 9 teams entered the Eastern Zone, and 7 teams entered the America Zone. Ecuador defeated the United States in the Americas Inter-Zonal final, India defeated Japan in the Eastern Inter-Zonal final, and Spain and South Africa were the winners of the two Europe sub-zones, defeating the Soviet Union and Brazil respectively. In the Inter-Zonal Zone, Spain defeated Ecuador and South Africa defeated India in the semifinals, and then Spain defeated South Africa in the final. Spain were then defeated by the defending champions Australia in the Challenge Round. The final was played at the Milton Courts in Brisbane, Australia on 26–28 December. The 1966 Davis Cup was the 55th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 32 teams entered the Europe Zone, 8 teams entered the Eastern Zone, and 6 teams entered the America Zone. For this year's competition the Europe Zone was split into two sub-zones. 16 teams competed in each sub-zone, with the winners of both sub-zones progressing to the Inter-Zonal Zone. This meant that 4 teams would now compete in the Inter-Zonal Zone for the right to challenge the defending champions Australia. Marty Riessen (born December 4, 1941) is an American former amateur and professional tennis player active from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was ranked as high as No. 11 in the world in singles on the ATP rankings in September 1974, though was ranked as high as world No. 8 by Lance Tingay of ''The Daily Telegraph'' in 1971 before the computer rankings. Clark Edward Graebner (born November 4, 1943) is an American former professional tennis player. He was four times a world top ten ranked player each year from 1966 to 1969, reaching world No. 3 in 1967 and world No. 7 the following year. He was ranked eight times in the top ten U.S. players by the USTA, reaching U.S. No. 2 in 1968 behind Arthur Ashe, and U.S. No. 3 in 1966 and 1971. Arthur Ashe
Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (July 10, 1943 – February 6, 1993) was an American professional tennis player. He won three Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, Grand Slam titles in singles and two in doubles. Ashe was the first Black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team, and the only Black man ever to win the singles titles at Wimbledon Championships, Wimbledon, the US Open (tennis), US Open, and the Australian Open. He retired in 1980. Miguel Olvera
Miguel Olvera (born November 14, 1939) is a tennis player active in the 1960s and 1970s, playing for Ecuador. In 1960, as an unseeded player, he won the singles title at the Cincinnati Open, the first unseeded player ever to win the singles title there. (The tournament began in 1899 and seeding began in 1927.) In 1967 in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Olvera and teammate Pancho Guzmán led the Ecuadorian Davis Cup to a stunning upset of the mighty United States Davis Cup team. After American Cliff Richey defeated Guzmán in the first singles match, Olvera, then 26 years old, faced Arthur Ashe in the second singles match. Cliff Richey
George Clifford Richey Jr. (born December 31, 1946) is an American former amateur and professional tennis player who was active during the 1960s and 1970s. Richey achieved a highest singles ranking of World No. 6 and reached at least the quarterfinal stage of the singles event at all four Grand Slam tournaments. Career Richey was the American junior national tennis champion in 1962 (16 years) and 1963 (18 years) and in 1964 he won the boys' singles title at the French Championships. He won his first senior singles in October 1962 at the Permian Basin Invitation in Midland, Texas against Butch Newman. Pancho Guzmán
J. Francisco Guzmán Carmigniani (born 24 May 1946), known as Pancho Guzmán, is an Ecuadorian former tennis player active in the 1960s and 1970s. Biography Guzmán, the son of a banker, began playing tennis at the age of seven and trained at the Guayaquil Tennis Club. He was 11 when he won his first national title and in 1961 was a finalist in the Orange Bowl. In 1963 he made his Davis Cup debut for Ecuador, for a tie against Trinidad and Tobago, aged only 17. In the 1965 French Championships, Guzmán was in the unusual situation of exiting in the third round, without even playing a match.
