1965–66 Cupa României
The 1965–66 Cupa României was the 28th edition of Romania's most prestigious football cup competition. The title was won by Steaua București against UTA Arad. Format The competition is an annual knockout tournament. In the first round proper, two pots were made, first pot with Divizia A teams and other teams till 16 and the second pot with the rest of teams qualified in this phase. Each tie is played as a single leg. First round proper matches are played on the ground of the lowest ranked team, then from the second round proper the matches are played on a neutral location. In the first round proper, if a match is drawn after 90 minutes, the game goes in extra time, and if the scored is still tight after 120 minutes, the team who played away will qualify. Dumitru Nicolae (born 29 April 1943) is a Romanian former footballer who played as a defender. International career Dumitru Nicolae played six games at international level for Romania, making his debut in friendly which ended with a 2–1 victory against France. Ioan Igna (born 4 June 1940) is a Romanian former association football, football referee (association football), referee and Football player, player. Igna played football at FC UTA Arad, UTA Arad between 1957 and 1960 and 1964–1967 and at FC Politehnica Timișoara, Știința Timișoara between 1961 and 1964, he became a referee in 1972. Christos Metskas (until 2007, ''Hristos Mețcas'', Greek: ''Χρήστος Μέτσκας''; born 17 June 1935) is a former footballer and football coach. Gavrilă Birău
Gavrilă Birău (also known as Gábor Bíró; 10 February 1945 – 16 March 2025) was a Romanian football player and manager. A right-back, he spent most of his career with UTA Arad. Club career Birău was born on 10 February 1945 in Sfântu Gheorghe, Romania and practised ice hockey, skiing, boxing and football until he was around the age of 18 when he started focusing only on football. He played junior level football at Textila Sfântu Gheorghe as a forward and in 1963 coach Gheorghe Ola called him up at a Romania youth team for a match against Turkey in which he was seen by UTA Arad's coach Nicolae Dumitrescu who proposed he come to UTA and Birău accepted. Carol Haidu (also known as Karol Haydu; 3 June 1942 – April 2023) was a Romanian footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Club career Haidu was born on 3 June 1942 in Râșnov, Romania under the name of Karol Haydu, but the communist authorities made him change it to Carol Haidu, in order to "sound more Romanian". Gheorghe Constantin
Gheorghe Constantin (14 December 1932 – 9 March 2010) was a Romanian footballer and coach, nicknamed 'The Professor' and a symbol of Steaua București. Playing career Constantin began his career with Unirea Tricolor's youth team, and shortly after their dissolution, he signed with Venus București. He played for only one year at his new club before moving to Avântul Reghin, then CFR Iaşi, before finally signing a contract with Steaua București. He played for Steaua for 15 years and helped the club win 8 domestic titles. In 1969, the Romanian Communist authorities allowed him to play abroad for Kayserispor in Turkey at age 37.
