Henri "Rik" Van Looy (20 December 1933 – 17 December 2024) was a Belgian professional Cycle sport, cyclist of the post-World War II, war period. Nicknamed the ''King of the Classics'' or ''Emperor of Herentals'' (after the small Belgian city where he lived), he dominated the classic cycle races in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Van Looy was twice World Cycling Championship, world professional road race champion, and was the first cyclist to win all five 'Cycling monument, Monuments': the most prestigious one-day Classic cycle races, classics – a feat since achieved by just two others (both also Belgians: Roger De Vlaeminck and Eddy Merckx). With 367 professional road victories, he ranks second all-time behind Eddy Merckx. Jos Hoevenaers
Jos Hoevenaers (30 November 1932, in Antwerp – 14 June 1995, in Wilrijk) was a Belgian cyclist, reputed for his attacking style. In 1960, he wore the pink jersey of leadership for eight days in the Giro d'Italia; however, Jacques Anquetil won instead. Bad luck, as well as inadequate time-trialling and sprinting, stopped Hoevenaers' becoming the best Belgian Tour rider of his generation. Theo Verschueren
Theo Verschueren (born 27 January 1943) is a retired Belgian cyclist. He had his best achievements in motor-paced racing, in which he won the world championships in the professionals category in 1971 and 1972 and finished second in 1969, 1970 and 1974. During his career Verschueren took part in 67 six-day road races, winning the race of Antwerp in 1968 and 1972. He married the daughter of Belgian cyclist Petrus Van Theemsche. He is not related to Adolph Verschueren, another motor-paced racing world champion from Belgium. Tom Simpson
Thomas Simpson (30 November 1937 – 13 July 1967) was one of Britain's most successful professional cyclists. He was born in Haswell, County Durham, and later moved to Harworth, Nottinghamshire. Simpson began road cycling as a teenager before taking up track cycling, specialising in pursuit races. He won a bronze medal for track cycling at the 1956 Summer Olympics and a silver at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. In 1959, at age 21, Simpson was signed by the French professional road-racing team . He advanced to their first team () the following year, and won the 1961 Tour of Flanders. Simpson then joined ; in the 1962 Tour de France he became the first British rider to wear the yellow jersey, finishing sixth overall. Georges Van Coningsloo
Georges Van Coningsloo (27 October 1940 – 7 April 2002) was a Belgian racing cyclist. Career Van Coningsloo was a professional from 1963 to 1974. In 1967, he won Bordeaux–Paris, after a 370 kilometer breakaway. He rode in four Grand Tours in his career: three editions of the Tour de France, and the 1970 Vuelta a España, but failed to finish all of the races. His son Philippe was also a high level cyclist. He died, however, before turning professional, after suffering a heart attack during a race. In his honor, a race called the Memorial Philippe Van Coningsloo is held in July. His other son, Olivier, was also a professional cyclist, who rode for two seasons before ending his career. Harelbeke
Harelbeke (; ) is a municipality and city located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises the city of Harelbeke proper and the towns of Bavikhove and Hulste. On January 1, 2019, Harelbeke had a total population of 28,447. The total area is 29.14 km² which gives a population density of 898 inhabitants per km². Inhabitants consider their hometown to be a "Weireldstad" (metropolis), which also led to a monthly "Harelbekedag" amongst the students of Harelbeke studying in Ghent. E3 Saxo Bank Classic, previously known as E3 BinckBank Classic, E3 Harelbeke, Harelbeke–Antwerp–Harelbeke and E3-Prijs Vlaanderen, is an annual road cycling race in Flanders, Belgium. The race starts and finishes in Harelbeke, covering 203 kilometres, mainly in the Flemish Ardennes. First raced in 1958, it is one of the more recently founded classic cycle races, one-day classics, but has developed into a prestigious and desirable event. It is on the UCI World Tour calendar, as part of a series of cobbled classics in Belgium and Northern France in March and April.
