1964–65 FC Basel Season
The 1964–65 season was Fussball Club Basel 1893's 71st season in their existence. It was their 19th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after their promotion in the 1945–46 season. They played their home games either in their old Landhof Stadium or in their new St. Jakob Stadium. Lucien Schmidlin was club chairman for the third consecutive year. Overview Pre-season The Czech manager Jiří Sobotka was the Basel team manager at this time, it was his fourth year as manager of the team. There were only a few changes in the squad. Kurt Stettler moved on to Young Fellows Zürich, René Burri to Cantonal Neuchatel and Bruno Gatti to Biel-Bienne. During the winter break Heinz Blumer moved on to Chiasso. In the other direction German striker Heinz Sartor joined from Südwest Ludwigshafen, Werner Decker joined from local team Concordia Basel and Bruno Gabrieli from Nordstern Basel. Hans Weber
Johann "Hans" Weber (8 September 1934 – 10 February 1965) was a Swiss football midfielder who played for Switzerland in the 1962 FIFA World Cup. He played 13 seasons for FC Basel and two seasons for Lausanne-Sport. Football career Weber played his youth football for Basel. In the season 1949–50 he was taken up by their first team. He played his first team debut on 24 September 1950, an away game at the Charmilles Stadium, Geneva, against Servette. He scored his first two goals for the club just one week later on 1 October 1950 in the home game against La Chaux-de-Fonds as Basel won with the end score 4–1. In the 1952–53 season Weber was part of the championship winning team. For the 1955–56 season Weber transferred to Lausanne-Sport. Inter-Cities Fairs Cup
The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, most commonly referred to as the Fairs Cup and sometimes as the European Fairs Cup or Fairs Cities' Cup, was a European football competition played between 1955 and 1971. The Fairs Cup was the idea of FIFA vice-president and executive committee member Ernst Thommen, Italian Football Federation president and FIFA executive committee member Ottorino Barassi and English Football Association general secretary, Stanley Rous. As the name suggests, the competition was set up to promote international trade fairs. Friendly games were regularly held between teams from cities holding trade fairs and it was from these games that the competition evolved. Initially, the competition was only open to cities that hosted trade fairs, and where the cities' clubs finished in their national league had no relevance. FC Nordstern Basel is a football team from Basel, Switzerland. Currently playing in the Swiss 8th division, FC Nordstern Basel has spent 35 seasons in the Swiss top flight, last in 1982. Bruno Gabrieli
Bruno Gabrieli (born 26 April 1939) is a Swiss former footballer who played in the late 1950s and 1960s. He played mainly as a striker, but also as a midfielder. Gabrieli played first for Grasshopper Club in the top tier of Swiss football. In 1963 he moved to live in Basel and then played for Nordstern two tiers lower. Gabrieli joined FC Basel's first team at the end of their 1963–64 season under manager Jiří Sobotka. In this first season with the club, Gabrieli played in only three games in the Cup of the Alps during June 1964. In their 1964–65 season, after three test games, Gabrieli made his domestic league debut for his new club in the first league game of the season on 23 August as Basel lost 2–3 against Biel-Bienne. Werner Decker
Werner Decker (16 July 1939 - 12 June 2017), commonly known as ''Pips'', was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Concordia Basel, FC Zürich and FC Basel and the Swiss amateur national team. He played in the position as midfielder. In later years he became trainer and coach. Football career Decker started his youth career by Concordia and at the age of 20 he advanced to their first team who at that time played in the Nationalliga B, the second highest tier of Swiss football. On the 16 October 1960 Concordia played as underdogs in the first round of the Swiss Cup against FC Basel and Decker scored the winning goal as Concordia won 2–1. FC Chiasso is a Swiss football club based in Chiasso. It was founded in 1905. Chiasso also played in the Italian first league between 1914 and 1923. The team currently play in 3.
