1964–65 Birmingham City F.C. Season
The 1964–65 Football League season was Birmingham City Football Club's 62nd in the Football League and their 38th in the First Division. Having replaced Gil Merrick as manager with coach Joe Mallett, newly arrived from Nottingham Forest,Matthews (1995), p. 62. they finished bottom of the 22-team division so were relegated to the Second Division for the 1965–66 season. They lost their opening match in each of the cup competitions, to West Ham United in the third round proper of the 1964–65 FA Cup and to Chelsea in the second round of the League Cup. Twenty-six players made at least one appearance in nationally organised first-team competition, and there were fifteen different goalscorers. Half back Winston Foster played in all 44 first-team matches over the season, and Stan Lynn and Geoff Vowden finished as joint leading goalscorers with only 10 goals each, all scored in league competition. Joe Mallett
Joseph Mallett (8 January 1916 – 8 February 2004), was an English professional footballer. He spent much of his early playing career at Queens Park Rangers, and subsequently at Southampton (playing as a wing half). He later became a coach, manager and scout. Playing career Born in Gateshead, Mallett was spotted playing for the Dunston Colliery works team by a London scout. He was signed at the age of seventeen by Charlton Athletic, to serve his apprenticeship under manager Jimmy Seed. He had not made any first team appearances before Charlton (then in the First Division) loaned him to Third Division South team Queens Park Rangers, to gain experience in April 1937. He remained at QPR until May 1938, making 31 appearances before returning to Charlton, where he appeared twice in the 1938–39 season. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, it is the oldest football league in the world, and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. The Football League was rebranded as the "English Football League" (EFL) starting with the 2016–17 season. Malcolm Beard
Malcolm Beard (born 3 May 1942) is an English former professional footballer born in Cannock, Staffordshire, who made more than 350 appearances in the Football League playing as a wing half. He spent the vast majority of his playing career at Birmingham City, for whom he made 405 appearances in all competitions. He joined the club as an amateur in 1957 when he left school, and turned professional in May 1959. He also played for Aston Villa and in non-league football for Atherstone Town. He went on to coach in England and abroad, and was employed as chief scout by Leicester City and Aston Villa. He was capped for England at youth level. Stoke City Football Club is a professional association football club based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Ken Leek
Kenneth Leek (26 July 1935 – 19 November 2007) was a Welsh footballer, who played as a centre forward or inside forward for several different clubs and for the Wales national team in a professional career which spanned from 1952 until 1968. He scored 145 goals in the Football League from 396 appearances with five clubs. Internationally he won 13 caps and scored five goals, and was a member of the Welsh squad for the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden although he did not play during the tournament. Leek started his career with Northampton Town aged 17 despite only playing football for three years. After six years, he earned a move to First Division Leicester City. He had three seasons at Leicester, and scored in every round of the FA Cup en route to the 1961 final. He was dropped from the final and soon moved on to Newcastle United. Mike Hellawell
Michael Stephen Hellawell (30 June 1938 – 18 July 2023) was an English professional footballer who made 322 appearances in the Football League and played twice for England. Club career Queens Park Rangers The 17-year-old Hellawell signed for Queens Park Rangers in August 1955 from Salts, a small Yorkshire League club from Saltaire, and made his debut in the home match against Exeter City on 25 February 1956. That was his only senior appearance of the season, but in 1956–57 he missed only two matches in all competitions, and was selected to play for the Third Division South representative team against the Northern Section in April 1957. He played 45 games in the Football League for Rangers before being transferred to Birmingham City in 1957 in part-exchange for inside-forward Bill Finney and "a good fee". Alex Harley
Alexander Harley (20 April 1936 – 24 June 1969) was a Scottish professional footballer who played for Third Lanark, Manchester City, Birmingham City, Dundee, Portadown and Cape Town City as a striker. Harley joined Third Lanark in 1958, and scored 71 goals in two seasons from 1960 to 1962, his 42 goals in the 1960–61 making him the highest scorer in the Scottish Football League First Division. In the 1962 close season Harley signed by English club Manchester City for £19,500. Harley debuted in a 2–0 defeat to Aston Villa on 25 August 1962, and scored his first ''Citizens'' goal two games later versus Tottenham Hotspur. Harley scored 31 more goals in all competitions that season, including the winner in a Manchester derby at Old Trafford, to become the club's leading scorer, but the Citizens finished the season in 21st place and were relegated. Winston Arthur Foster (born 1 November 1941) is an English former professional footballer. He played more than 150 games in the top two divisions of the Football League for Birmingham City. Born in South Yardley, Birmingham, Foster joined Birmingham City as a junior, making his first-team debut at the age of 19 as a full back.
