1963–64 San Francisco Warriors Season
The 1963–64 NBA season was the Warriors' 18th season in the NBA and second in San Francisco. The Warriors were led by superstar center Wilt Chamberlain and renowned playmaker Guy Rodgers, both of whom were named to their second-consecutive all-star games during the season. The Warriors were also aided by rookie draft pick Nate Thurmond as well as veterans Tom Meschery and Al Attles, and were coached by newcomer Alex Hannum. The Warriors won 48 games in the regular season, and beat the St. Louis Hawks in a tough seven-game series during the conference finals to advance to the NBA Finals, in only their second season as a San Francisco team. Alex Hannum
Alexander Murray Hannum (July 19, 1923 – January 18, 2002) was an American professional basketball player and coach. As a player, Hannum played for six different teams, most notably with the Milwaukee (later St. Louis) Hawks, where he played for three seasons. Midway through the 1956-57 season, Hannum was named player-coach of the Hawks with 31 games left in the season; the team reached the NBA Finals and lost in seven games. Hannum retired as a player after the season ended to focus on coaching. In the 1957-58 season, the Hawks won 41 games and won the Western Division again on their way to another matchup against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, where the Hawks won the championship in Game 6 for the championship—the only one in Hawks history. Hannum left the team in the offseason after a dispute with ownership but returned to the NBA to coach the Syracuse Nationals in 1960. 1963–64 Cincinnati Royals Season
The 1963–64 season was the Royals 16th season in the NBA and its seventh in Cincinnati. The Royals finished in 2nd place with a 55–25 record, the second best record in the NBA. The team's outstanding roster included Oscar Robertson, Jerry Lucas, Team Captain Wayne Embry, Jack Twyman, Arlen Bockhorn, Bob Boozer, Tom Hawkins, Adrian Smith, Bud Olsen, Larry Staverman and coach Jack McMahon . The team is noteworthy for having both the NBA MVP in Robertson and the NBA Rookie of the Year in Lucas, a rare occurrence in NBA history. The team played most of their home games at Cincinnati Gardens arena, but also hosted home games that season in Dayton, Lima, Columbus at Saint John arena and Cleveland at Cleveland Arena. In the playoffs the Royals defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in a 5-game series, but both Lucas and Olsen would be lost to injury. Wayne Hightower
Wayne A. Hightower (January 14, 1940 – April 18, 2002) was an American professional basketball player who had a long and productive career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and American Basketball Association (ABA) from 1962 to 1972. He stood and primarily played the Forward (basketball), forward positions. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and attended Overbrook High School (Philadelphia), Overbrook High School from 1955 to 1958, where he played basketball. His professional career began in 1961 after his departure from the University of Kansas at the end his junior year. Hightower stated he did so to financially support his family, but he would have been ineligible to play basketball his senior year due to his poor Grading in education, academic standing.
