1962β63 Syracuse Nationals Season
The 1962β63 NBA season was the Nationals' 14th season in the NBA. In their final season in Syracuse, the Nationals finished with a record of 48β32, good enough for 2nd place in the NBA Eastern Division. They qualified for the playoffs but lost to the Cincinnati Royals, 3 games to 2 in the East semifinals. Following this season, the Nationals relocated to Philadelphia and became the 76ers, filling the void left by the Warriors, who moved to the Bay Area the prior year. Alex Hannum
Alexander Murray Hannum (July 19, 1923 β January 18, 2002) was an American professional basketball player and coach. As a player, Hannum played for six different teams, most notably with the Milwaukee (later St. Louis) Hawks, where he played for three seasons. Midway through the 1956-57 season, Hannum was named player-coach of the Hawks with 31 games left in the season; the team reached the NBA Finals and lost in seven games. Hannum retired as a player after the season ended to focus on coaching. In the 1957-58 season, the Hawks won 41 games and won the Western Division again on their way to another matchup against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, where the Hawks won the championship in Game 6 for the championshipβthe only one in Hawks history. Hannum left the team in the offseason after a dispute with ownership but returned to the NBA to coach the Syracuse Nationals in 1960. San Francisco Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based in San Francisco. The Warriors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. Dave Gambee
Dave Gambee (born April 16, 1937) is an American former basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Early life Gambee attended Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Oregon and starred in basketball and baseball. College career Gambee chose to stay in town and play college basketball at Oregon State University. Following the 1957β58 season, the 6-foot-7 Gambee was OSUβs career leader in points scored (1,468), was No. 3 in rebounds (828) and he had five 30-plus scoring games. Gambee was named an All-American twice while at Oregon State. He garnered those high honors in 1957 and 1958, and was also a first-team All-Pacific Coast Conference selection both years. Larry Costello
Lawrence Ronald Costello (July 2, 1931 β December 13, 2001) was an American professional basketball player and coach. He played for the Philadelphia Warriors and the Syracuse Nationals / Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA, and the Wilkes-Barre Barons of the EPBL. He served as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks and the Chicago Bulls. A six-time All-Star, Costello was the National Basketball Association's last two-handed set shooter. As the inaugural coach of the Bucks, he led them to a championship in their third season of existence in 1971, the fastest run for an expansion team in NBA history. In ten seasons as a coach, Costello reached the postseason six times, while winning 37 of his 60 postseason games as coach, for a winning percentage of 61.7%, ninth best in NBA history. Harold Everett Greer ( ; June 26, 1936 β April 14, 2018) was an American professional basketball player and coach. He played for the Syracuse Nationals / Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1958 through 1973. A guard, Greer was a 10-time NBA All-Star and was named to the All-NBA Second Team seven times. He was named to the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, and his uniform number was among Philadelphia 76ers retired numbers. Johnny Kerr
John Graham Kerr (July 17, 1932 β February 26, 2009), also known as Red Kerr, was an American basketball player, coach, executive and broadcaster who devoted six decades to the sport at all levels. The affable 6'9", 230-pound center starred for the University of Illinois (1951β1954) before he became a three-time All-Star and one-time league champion in the NBA (1954β66), primarily as a member of the Syracuse Nationals. Kerr was the first of the NBA iron men in the early years of the league. From 1954 to 1965, he played in 917 consecutive games, including 844 in the regular season, a record that stood for 17 years. Lee Philip Shaffer II (born February 23, 1939) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'7" forward born in Chicago, Shaffer starred at the University of North Carolina, where he was the ACC Men's Basketball Player of the Year in 1960. Shaffer was the #5 selection of the Syracuse Nationals in the 1960 NBA draft, after Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame players Oscar Robertson (#1) and Jerry West (#2). He was selected ahead of future Hall of Famers Lenny Wilkens (#6) and Satch Sanders (#8). Shaffer and another 1960 First Round Draft choice, Al Bunge (#7), signed with the AAU instead of the NBA, in an era where salaries were small.
