1962–63 FC Basel Season
The 1962–63 season was FC Basel, Fussball Club Basel 1893's 69th season in their existence. It was their 17th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after their promotion in the 1945–46 season. They played their home games either in their old Landhof Stadium or in their new St. Jakob Stadium. Lucien Schmidlin was voted as new club chairman at the AGM to follow Ernst Weber, who had announced his retirement from the position. Overview Pre-season The Czechoslovakian manager Jiří Sobotka was the club manager at this time, he taken the job over from Jenő Vincze a year before. A season earlier many youngsters had joined the team and this pre-season the same occurred again. Rolf Lüdi, Enrico Mazzola and Hansruedi Herr were brought up from reserve team. Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss professional Association football, football club based in Basel, in the Basel-Stadt, Canton of Basel-Stadt. Enrico Mazzola
Enrico Mazzola (born 7 April 1944) was an Italian footballer who played for FC Basel. He played mainly as a forward, but also as a midfielder. Football career Mazzola joined Basel's first team during their 1962–63 season under manager Jiří Sobotka. On 15 April 1963 the Wankdorf Stadium hosted the Cup Final and Basel played against favorites Grasshopper Club. Two goals after half time, one by Heinz Blumer and the second from Otto Ludwig gave Basel a 2–0 victory and their third Cup win in their history. Mazzola made his league debut in the home game against Biel-Bienne in the Landhof on 19 May as Basel won 3–2. A well-documented curiosity was the fact that during the winter break of their 1963–64 season the team travelled on a world tour. Paul Speidel
Paul Speidel (born 26 July 1938) is a Swiss retired footballer who played in the 1950s and 1960s. He played as a striker. Speidel first played for FC Olten. He joined FC Basel's first team for their 1959–60 season under manager Jenő Vincze. After four test matches, Speidel played his domestic league debut for his new club in the home game at the Landhof on 24 April 1960 as Basel won 4–0 against La Chaux-de-Fonds. Speidel scored his first league goal for his club on 16 April 1961 in the away game as Basel won 4–2 against Grasshopper Club. It was the last goal of the match. Between the years 1959 and 1962 Speidle played a total of 48 games for Basel scoring a total of six goals. 27 of these games were in the Nationalliga A, one in the Swiss Cup, six in the International Football Cup and 14 were friendly games. Silvan Thüler
Silvan "Sämi" Thüler (1 August 1932 – 13 August 2011) was a Swiss international footballer. He played as a defender. After his football career he became restaurant landlord and later a manager. Football career Born in Solothurn, Thüler played his youth football with FC Solothurn, advancing to their first team in the summer of 1950. At the end of the 1951–52 season Solothurn won their group in the Swiss 1. Liga (third national level) and in the play-offs won promotion to the Nationalliga B. Thüler remained with his club for a further three seasons. Transfer fees in Switzerland were rising rapidly in this period. Hansueli Oberer (11 May 1929 – 20 September 2005) was a Swiss footballer who played in the 1950s and early 1960s as a forward. Oberer first played for FC Olten in the 1 Liga, the third tier of Swiss football. He joined FC Basel's first team for their 1954–55 season under player-coach René Bader. After playing in five friendlies Oberer made his domestic league debut for his new club in the away game on 12 September 1954; he scored his first goal for his club in that game, but could not save the team from a 1–3 defeat by Chiasso. Karl Odermatt (born 17 December 1942) is a Swiss former footballer who played for FC Basel and BSC Young Boys throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He played as a midfielder or striker and is generally regarded as one of the best players ever to have worn the FC Basel shirt. He played through, what is now thought to be, Basel's golden years under trainer and manager Helmut Benthaus with teammates such as Paul Fischli, René Hasler and Ottmar Hitzfeld. Bruno Gatti (28 August 1941 – 7 March 2012) was a Swiss footballer who played in the 1960s for Black Stars Basel, FC Basel and then FC Biel-Bienne. He played as a forward. Football career In December 1962 Gatti transferred from the Black Stars Basel to FC Basel. Gatti wrote himself a special Swiss Cup story in this 1962/63 season. Before the winter break, he played with the Black Stars in the Cup against FC Basel and his club was knocked out of the competition. Then gatti switched to FCB - and eventually became Cup winner with his new club. He played his debut for his new team on 30 December 1962 in the Cup as Basel won against SC Burgdorf 7–1. Werner Meier (footballer)
Werner Meier (born 15 April 1937) is a Swiss former footballer who played in the 1950s and 1960s as striker. Meier first played for Nordstern Basel in the Nationalliga B, the second tier of Swiss football, for at least three years, scoring 17 goals in 42 league matches. He transferred to Urania Genève Sport in 1957. In the 1960–61 season he again played for Nordstern but the team were relegated to the third tier. He played for them another year before moving on. Meier joined FC Basel's first team for their 1962–63 season under manager Jiří Sobotka. In his first game for his new club in the 1962–63 Intertoto Cup, Meier scored his first two goals for the club, but this could not help the team from being defeated 3–4 by PSV Eindhoven.
