1961–62 FC Basel Season
The 1961–62 season was FC Basel, Fussball Club Basel 1893's 68th season in their existence. It was their 16th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football following their promotion from the Nationalliga B the season 1945–46. They played their home games in the Landhof, in the Wettstein Quarter in Kleinbasel. Ernst Weber was the club's chairman for the third consecutive season. Overview Pre-season The former Czechoslovak footballer Jiří Sobotka was appointed as Basel's new team manager. Sobotka had been manager for FC La Chaux-de-Fonds, La Chaux-de-Fonds from 1946 to 1959 and during this time had won the championship twice and the cup competition five times. He was manager for Feyenoord from 1959 to 1961 and had won the Dutch League with them in the season before he was hired by Basel. A number of older players left the squad. FC Basel
Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss professional Association football, football club based in Basel, in the Basel-Stadt, Canton of Basel-Stadt. René Burri
René Burri (9 April 1933 – 20 October 2014) was a Swiss photographer. Burri was a member of Magnum Photos and photographed major political, historical and cultural events and key figures of the second half of the 20th century. He made portraits of Che Guevara and Pablo Picasso as well as iconic pictures of São Paulo and Brasília. Life and work Burri studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich from 1949 to 1953, where he worked under Hans Finsler, Alfred Willimann and Johannes Itten. From 1953 to 1955 he began working as a documentary filmmaker while completing military service. During this time he also began working with Leica cameras. Then he worked for Disney as a cameraman until 1955. FC Zürich
Fussballclub Zürich, commonly abbreviated to FC Zürich or simply FCZ, is a professional football club based in Zurich, Switzerland. The club was founded in 1896 and has won the Swiss Super League thirteen times and the Swiss Cup ten times. Their most recent titles are the 2022 Swiss Super League and the 2018 Swiss Cup. International Football Cup
The UEFA Intertoto Cup (from , "between" and , " betting pool"),Most precisely, from (football pool); cf. originally called the International Football Cup, was a summer football competition between European clubs. The competition was discontinued after the 2008 tournament. The tournament was founded in 1961–62, but was only taken over by UEFA in 1995. Initially, the tournament ended with a single champion, who received the Intertoto Cup. Starting in 1967, the tournament ended with a number of group winners (7 to 14 winners), who received cash prizes. When UEFA took on the tournament, it became a qualifier for the UEFA Cup, with 2 to 11 Intertoto winners advancing to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. Kandern
Kandern () is a city in southwestern Germany in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in the '' Kreis'' (district) of Lörrach. During the Battle of Schliengen, in which the French Revolutionary army fought the forces of Austria, the battle lines of both armies ended in Kandern. Wilfried Fritz
Wilfried Fritz (born 4 June 1940) is a German former footballer who played for FC Basel in the early 1960s. He played mainly in the position of striker, but also as midfielder. Fritz joined Basel's first team for their 1961–62 season under manager Jiří Sobotka. Fritz played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 27 August 1961 as Basel played against Lausanne-Sport. He scored his first goal for his club on 10 September in the away game against Grasshopper Club. In fact he scored two goals in that game, but he could not save Basel from a 3–4 defeat. Fritz played two seasons for Basel. Roland Denicola
Roland Denicola (born 6 February 1939) is a Swiss former footballer who played for FC Basel in the early 1960s as a forward. Denicola joined Basel's first team for their 1961–62 season under manager Jiří Sobotka. After one match in the 1961–62 International Football Cup and one test game, Denicola made his domestic league debut for the club in the home game at the Landhof on 11 November 1961. He scored his first goal for his club in the same game as Basel won 4–2 against Zürich. In his only season with the club, Denicola played eight games for Basel and scored twice.
