1960–61 Oberliga
The 1960–61 Oberliga was the sixteenth season of the Oberliga, the first tier of the football league system in West Germany. The league operated in five regional divisions, Berlin, North, South, Southwest and West. The five league champions and the runners-up from the west, south, southwest and north then entered the 1961 German football championship which was won by 1. FC Nürnberg. It was 1. FC Nürnberg's eighth national championship and its first since 1948. A similar-named league, the DDR-Oberliga, existed in East Germany, set at the first tier of the East German football league system. The 1960 DDR-Oberliga was won by ASK Vorwärts Berlin, after which the league reverted to the traditional autumn-spring format and held its next season in 1961–62 . Oberliga (football)
The Oberliga (, "Upper League"; plural: ''Oberligen'') is the fifth tier of the German football league system. Before the introduction of the 3. Liga in 2008, it was the fourth tier. At the end of the 2011–12 season, the number of Oberligas was increased from eleven to fourteen. With the exception of the Nazi-era '' Gauliga'', the term ''Oberliga'' (equivalent to ''Premier League'' in English) was used prior to the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963 for first-division leagues in West Germany. Between 1978–94 the term ''Amateuroberliga'' was used for third-tier leagues, which were then the highest level of amateur play in the country. The current usage of the designation Oberliga was introduced in 1994. 1960 DDR-Oberliga
The 1960 DDR-Oberliga was the twelfth season of the DDR-Oberliga, the first tier of league football in East Germany. It was the last season not to be played in the traditional autumn-spring format, with the Oberliga having played for six seasons from 1955 to 1960 in the calendar year format instead, modelled on the system used in the Soviet Union. From 1961–62 onwards the league returned to its traditional format. The league was contested by fourteen teams. National People's Army club ASK Vorwärts Berlin won the championship, the club's second of six national East German championships. On the strength of the 1960 title Vorwärts qualified for the 1961–62 European Cup where the club was knocked out by Rangers F.C. in the first round. The football league system of the German Democratic Republic (GDR, German: ''Deutsche Demokratische Republik'' or DDR) existed from 1949 until shortly after German reunification in 1991. Structure For most of its history, competitive GDR football was divided into three tiers. The Oberliga was founded in 1949, and served as GDR football's highest tier of competition throughout the country's existence. The Liga was founded in 1950 as the GDR's second tier of competitive football. Between 1950 and 1954, Liga clubs were divided into geographical sub-divisions. In 1955, the Liga switched to a single division format, before reverting to geography-based sub-divisions in 1962. The DDR-Oberliga (English: ''East German Premier League'' or ''GDR Premier League'') was the top-level association football league in East Germany. The Oberliga Nord was the fourth tier of the German football league system in the north of Germany. It covered the states of Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. With the introduction of the 3. Liga, the league ceased to exist from 2008.
