1958 NAIA Football Season
The 1958 college football season was the 90th season of intercollegiate football in the United States. It concluded with two teams having claim to the major college national championship: * LSU compiled an 11–0 record, defeated Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, and was ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press (AP) writers and United Press International (UPI) coaches polls. LSU received 139 first-place votes in the AP poll and 29 of 35 first-place votes in the UPI poll. LSU was also selected as the national champion by numerous other selectors, including: Billingsley Report, College Football Researchers Association, Helms Athletic Foundation, and National Championship Foundation. Pete Dawkins
Peter Miller Dawkins (born March 8, 1938) is an American business executive and former college football player, hockey player, military officer, and political candidate. Dawkins attended the United States Military Academy, where he played as a halfback for the Army Cadets football team from 1956 to 1958. As a senior in 1958 he won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and was named as a consensus All-American. After graduating from the Military Academy in 1959, he studied at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Dawkins served as an officer in the United States Army until he retired in 1983 with the rank of brigadier general. He received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement presented by Awards Council member and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Bernard W. Rogers, USA in 1983. Heisman Trophy
The Heisman Memorial Trophy ( ; also known simply as the Heisman) is awarded annually since 1935 to the top player in college football. It is considered the most prestigious award in the sport and is presented by the Heisman Trophy Trust following the regular season in December. Maxwell Award
The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the college football player judged by a panel of sportscasters, sportswriters, and National Collegiate Athletic Association head coaches and the membership of the Maxwell Football Club to be the best all-around in the United States. The award is named after Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, a Swarthmore College football player, coach, and sportswriter. Johnny Lattner (1952, 1953) and Tim Tebow (2007, 2008) are the only players to have won the award twice. 1958 Northeastern State Redmen Football Team
The 1958 Northeastern State Redmen football team represented Northeastern State University as a member of the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference (OCC) during the 1958 NAIA football season. In their third season under head coach Harold "Tuffy" Stratton, the Redmen compiled a perfect 11–0 record (6–0 against OCC opponents) and won the OCC championship. In the post-season, they defeated in the NAIA playoffs and Arizona State–Flagstaff in the Holiday Bowl to win the NAIA national championship. Guard Claude Billingsley won NAIA All-America honors. The 1958 Florida A&M Rattlers football team was an American football team that represented Florida A&M University as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) during the 1958 college football season. The 1958 small college football rankings are rankings of college football teams representing smaller college and university teams during the 1958 college football season. The rankings were prepared and published the United Press International (UPI). It was the first year that the UPI compiled small-college rankings. The Associated Press (AP) did not begin publishing small-college rankings until 1960. The UPI's small-college rankings for 1957 were based on voting by the UPI's board of coaches.
