1956–57 Fort Wayne Pistons Season
The 1956–57 NBA season was the Pistons' ninth season in the NBA, 16th season as a franchise, and the final season for the team in Fort Wayne. The Pistons finished 34-38(.472), the first losing season in five years, finishing in a three-way tie for first in the Western Division, but were seeded third after the St. Louis Hawks defeated both the Pistons and the Minneapolis Lakers in tie-breaking games. In the West Semifinals, the Lakers eliminated the Pistons 2–0. The team was led on the season by forward George Yardley (21.5 ppg, 10. rpg, NBA All-Star) and forward-center Mel Hutchins (12.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg, NBA All-Star). Following the season, the Pistons relocated to Detroit as owner Fred Zollner determined Fort Wayne was too small to support an NBA team. Charles Eckman
Charles Markwood Eckman Jr. (September 10, 1921 – July 3, 1995) was an American basketball head coach and professional basketball Official (basketball), referee for the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was also a sports broadcaster. Early life Eckman was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1921 to Charles Markwood Eckman Sr. and Marie Margaret Eckman. Eckman's father fought during World War I and was gassed during the Meuse–Argonne offensive in France. His father survived the war, but died from his wounds when Charley was 12 years old. After that, Eckman and his mother struggled to make ends meet during the Depression. He went to work as a helper on a delivery truck for the Cambria's Bugle Coat and Apron Company that same year his father died. 1956–57 Boston Celtics Season
The 1956–57 Boston Celtics season was the 11th season for the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This was the first time in franchise history where the Celtics advanced to the NBA Finals, which they won over the St. Louis Hawks in 7 games. The Celtics would make the Finals a record 10 consecutive seasons, spanning from this season to the 1965–66 season. They were led by 1957's MVP Bob Cousy, as well as Bill Russell, Bill Sharman, and 1957's Rookie of the Year Tom Heinsohn. HoopsHype would later rank this championship squad as tied with the 1955–56 Philadelphia Warriors team a season prior as the team with the second-easiest path to the NBA Finals ever in 2024 due to them being one of three total championship teams who had playoff opponents that averaged around an average overall record or less during their championship run. Bob Houbregs
Robert J. Houbregs (March 12, 1932 – May 28, 2014) was a Canadian professional basketball player. Houbregs was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. Basketball career A 6-foot 8-inch, 225-pound forward-centre, from Queen Anne High School in Seattle, Washington, Houbregs played for the University of Washington Huskies from 1949 to 1953 (his family moved to Seattle from Vancouver, British Columbia when he was a child). In 1952, Houbregs was a Second Team Consensus All-America selection. In 1953, as a senior, he was named NCAA Player of the Year, was a Consensus All-America selection, helped lead the 1952–53 Huskies to the Final Four in the NCAA tournament, and was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 34.8 points per game in the post-season. Larry Foust
Laurence Michael Foust (June 24, 1928 – October 27, 1984) was an American basketball player who spent 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA), most notably with the Fort Wayne Pistons and Minneapolis Lakers. In a twelve-year career, he was a two-time All-NBA Team member and an eight-time All-Star while reaching the NBA Finals five times. His eight All-Star selections (which occurred in his first nine years as a player) is the most in NBA history for an eligible player who has not been selected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
