United States gubernatorial elections were held in 1956, in 30 states, concurrent with the United States House elections, 1956, House, United States Senate elections, 1956, Senate elections and the 1956 United States presidential election, presidential election, on November 6, 1956 (September 10 in Maine). The special election in Oregon was due to the death of incumbent governor Paul L. Patterson on January 31. This was the last time Colorado, Maine, and Ohio elected their governors to 2-year terms, all switching to 4-years from the 1958 election. The 1956 Oregon gubernatorial special election took place on November 6, 1956. Democratic Oregon State Senate, state senator Robert D. Holmes narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Elmo Smith to win the election. Background On January 31, 1956, Governor Paul L. Patterson, who was elected in the Oregon gubernatorial election, 1954, 1954 gubernatorial election, died in office of a coronary occlusion. Patterson's death elevated Oregon State Senate President Elmo Smith to governor and a special election for November was called to fill the position for the final two years of Patterson's term. Ralph Tucker
Ralph Tucker (September 30, 1906 – November 21, 1977) was the longest-serving mayor of Terre Haute, Indiana, serving from 1948 to 1968. Biography One of nine children, Ralph Tucker was born in Hymera, Indiana. Tucker's father died when the young Ralph was three years old. His mother, left to support nine children alone, placed Ralph in an orphanage, where he would live until he was nearly ten years old. He would later live with an older sister. When Tucker reached adulthood, he moved to Chicago, where he became a salesman and met the woman who would become his wife, Virginia. They were wed in 1936. Also that year, the young couple moved back to Terre Haute, where Tucker worked for radio station WBOW. Thomas LeRoy Collins (March 10, 1909 – March 12, 1991) was an American politician who served as the 33rd governor of Florida from 1955 to 1961. Collins began his governorship after winning a special election in 1954, and was elected to a four-year term in 1956.
