He is commonly regarded as the best center of his era, overshadowed (if anything) in his later years only by Tarzan Cooper. After ending his playing career in 1937, Lapchick became head coach at St. John's University, a position he held until 1947, when he took over the New York Knicks in the NBA. Lapchick coached the Knicks until 1957, leading them to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances (1951–1953). He returned to St. John's, coaching them until 1965. Early life Born in Yonkers, New York to Czech immigrants, Lapchick as a boy helped his struggling family make ends meet by scrounging for coal near railroad tracks. At age 12 the youngster started playing basketball around his neighborhood, wearing a uniform his mother had made for him. Like many youngsters of the era, he stopped going to ...

1949–50 Denver Nuggets Season
The 1949–50 NBA season was the only season for the original Denver Nuggets franchise in the National Basketball Association, as well as their second professional basketball season when you include their previous season that they played in the preceding National Basketball League. During their only season in the NBA, the original Nuggets franchise faced plenty of challenges due to the fact that airplanes were not yet seen as a common way to travel to long distances at a time and that trains were considered the way to travel from one destination to another at the time. Not only that, but some of the bigger markets like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia saw the city of Denver as something more akin to the smaller cities of Anderson, Indiana, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, or Waterloo, Iowa as awkward locations to play under due to how far away Denver was when compared to the rest of the league's locations at the time. This would eventually lead to the original Nuggets ending their only sea ...

1949–50 Baltimore Bullets Season
The 1949–50 Baltimore Bullets season was the first season of the Maryland club in the newly formed National Basketball Association and sixth overall season of existence including multiple other leagues. Coming from two out of three successful seasons in the American Basketball League, including a championship in 1946, and two successful seasons in the BAA, including a championship run in 1948, their 25–43 record this time around would not be sufficient for them to reach the division playoffs. Another change from the previous year was president Robert "Jake" Embry's decision not to televise the Bullets' games. The 1949–50 NBA season was the only season for the Anderson Packers in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as well as their fourth professional season of existence when including the seasons they played in the preceding National Basketball League. Following the conclusion of this season, they would withdraw their operations from participating in the NBA altogether due to pressure against big-market areas like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia voicing their dismay against playing in places like Anderson during the season, which led to the Packers, Sheboygan Red Skins, Waterloo Hawks, and the original Denver Nuggets (who would later rebrand themselves as the Denver Refiners at first) creating the short-lived rivaling National Professional Basketball League as a failed effort to survive beyond the NBA.
