Császár Polyhedron
In geometry, the Császár polyhedron () is a nonconvex toroidal polyhedron with 14 triangular faces. This polyhedron has no diagonals; every pair of vertices is connected by an edge. The seven vertices and 21 edges of the Császár polyhedron form an embedding of the complete graph onto a topological torus. Of the 35 possible triangles from vertices of the polyhedron, only 14 are faces. Complete graph The tetrahedron and the Császár polyhedron are the only two known polyhedra (having a manifold boundary) without any diagonals: every two vertices of the polygon are connected by an edge, so there is no line segment between two vertices that does not lie on the polyhedron boundary. Ákos Császár
Ákos Császár (, ) (26 February 1924 – 14 December 2017) was a Hungarian mathematician, specializing in general topology and real analysis. He discovered the Császár polyhedron, a nonconvex polyhedron without diagonals. He introduced the notion of syntopogeneous spaces, a generalization of topological spaces. He was born in Budapest. Towards the end of 1944 his grandfather lost his life during the Siege of Budapest. Then his father, older brother and himself were arrested by the Germans and sent to a concentration camp approximatively 45 miles east of Budapest. An infectious illness spread in the camp, and his brother and father died, but Ákos survived. He was a member of the group of five students of the late professor Lipót Fejér, who called them "The Big Five". Herbert Butterfield
Sir Herbert Butterfield (7 October 1900 – 20 July 1979) was an English historian and philosopher of history, who was Regius Professor of Modern History and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He is remembered chiefly for a short volume early in his career entitled ''The Whig Interpretation of History'' (1931) and for his ''Origins of Modern Science'' (1949). Butterfield turned increasingly to historiography and man's developing view of the past. Butterfield was a devout Christian and reflected at length on Christian influences in historical perspectives. Butterfield thought that individual personalities were more important than great systems of government or economics in historical study. Patomskiy Crater
The Patomskiy crater or Patom crater (, ''Patomskiy Krater''), also known as , ''Konus Kolpakova'' "Kolpakov cone") is a peculiar rock formation located in the Bodaibo District of the Irkutsk region of southeastern Siberia, from the district center Bodaibo. It is a large mound made of shattered limestone blocks on the slopes of the Patom Highlands in an area of dense taiga. Its base diameter is about and its height about ; the cone's crown is ring-shaped, and in its center there is a smaller mound with a height of about . The volume of the crater is estimated as , with a weight of about one million tons. 1949 Ambato Earthquake
The 1949 Ambato earthquake was a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that on August 5, 1949, struck Ecuador's Tungurahua Province southeast of its capital Ambato and killed 5,050 people. The nearby villages of Guano, Patate, Pelileo, and Pillaro were destroyed, and the city of Ambato suffered heavy damage. The earthquake flattened buildings and subsequent landslides caused damage throughout the Tungurahua, Chimborazo, and Cotopaxi Provinces. It disrupted water mains and communication lines and opened a fissure into which the small town of Libertad sank. Moderate shaking from the event extended as far away as Quito and Guayaquil.
