1944–45 In Scottish Football
The 1944–45 season was the 72nd season of competitive football in Scotland and the sixth season of special wartime football during World War II. Overview Between 1939 and 1946 normal competitive football was suspended in Scotland. Many footballers signed up to fight in the war and as a result many teams were depleted, and fielded guest players instead. The Scottish Football League and Scottish Cup were suspended and in their place regional league competitions were set up. Appearances in these tournaments do not count in players' official records. Honours League competition was split into two regional leagues, the Southern League and the North-Eastern League. No country-wide cup competition took place, the Glasgow Cup, East of Scotland Shield and Renfrewshire Cup continued, the Forfarshire Cup was revived and Southern and North-Eastern League Cups were competed for, the Southern League Cup would later form the basis of the League Cup. Southern League Cup (Scotland)
The Southern League Cup was a regional Scottish football competition held during the Second World War, due to the suspension of national competitions. Held between 1940 and 1946, the competition involved all teams from the Southern League and was played as four groups of four with the group winners forming the semi-finals. In the final season, due to additional teams, the competition doubled in size with quarter-finals for the eight group winners. Rangers dominated the tournament, appearing in every final and winning four out of the six. On two occasions, the winners were decided by which team had more corner kicks after the finals ended in draws. Tommy Walker (footballer Born 1915)
Thomas Walker OBE (26 May 1915 – 11 January 1993) was a Scottish footballer, who played for Heart of Midlothian, Chelsea and the Scotland national team. He later managed Hearts and Raith Rovers before becoming a director of Hearts in his later years.
