Conn Smythe
Constantine Falkland Cary Smythe Military Cross, MC (; February 1, 1895 – November 18, 1980) was a Canadian businessman, soldier and sportsman in ice hockey and horse racing. He is best known as the principal owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1927 to 1961 and as the builder of Maple Leaf Gardens. As owner of the Leafs during numerous championship years, his name appears on the Stanley Cup eight times: 1932, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1962. Smythe is also known for having served in both World Wars, organizing his own artillery battery in the Second World War. The horses of Smythe's racing stable won the Queen's Plate three times among 145 stakes race wins during his lifetime. Smythe started and ran a sand and gravel business. George Abbott (ice Hockey)
George Henry Abbott (August 3, 1911 – December 31, 1996) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played in one National Hockey League game for the Boston Bruins during the 1943–44 NHL season. He was born in Sydenham, Ontario, but grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. Playing career Abbott was the practice goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs as well as a minister. He played for the Dunnville Mudcats before his career ended during a practice session with the Hamilton Tigers when a deflected puck struck him in the eye. On November 27, 1943, the Maple Leafs were due to play the Boston Bruins where the Bruins' starting goaltender Bert Gardiner suffered from illness and couldn't play. Bruins coach Art Ross borrowed Abbott to play for the night. Toronto went on to win the game 7-3 as Abbott faced 52 shots. The Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) is the governing body for the majority of junior and senior level ice hockey teams in the province of Ontario. Founded in 1890, the OHA is sanctioned by the Ontario Hockey Federation along with the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. Other Ontario sanctioning bodies along with the OHF include the Hockey Eastern Ontario and Hockey Northwestern Ontario. Jean Edouard Alfred Joseph Marois (November 5, 1924 – January 3, 1996) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played three games in the National Hockey League: one with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1943, and two with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1953. Bucko McDonald
Wilfred Kennedy "Bucko" McDonald (October 31, 1911 – July 19, 1991) was a Canadian professional hockey and lacrosse player, coach, and politician. Born in Fergus, Ontario, he played for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and New York Rangers between 1935 and 1945. He won the Stanley Cup three times in his career, in 1936 and 1937 with Detroit and in 1942 with Toronto. McDonald was also a lacrosse player, who won a Mann Cup and was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1971. The Ontario Lacrosse Association honoured McDonald by naming an award after him; the highest-scoring player is awarded the Bucko McDonald Trophy. Gordon Bell (ice Hockey)
Gordon John Edward "Tinkle" Bell (March 13, 1925 – November 3, 1980) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender. In the 1945–46 season he made 8 appearances for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He would not play another NHL game for 10 more years when he suited up for the New York Rangers in 2 playoff games during the 1955–56 season. Bell played several seasons in the minor league American Hockey League. He began his pro career in 1942–43 with the Buffalo Bisons of the AHL. After a two-season absence from pro hockey, he split the 1944–5 season between Toronto and the Providence Reds. He died in Belleville, Ontario on November 3, 1980. Red Garrett
Dudley Morine "Red" Garrett (July 24, 1924 – November 24, 1944) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman whose brief but promising career was tragically cut short by war. During the 1942–43 season, he appeared in 23 games with the New York Rangers, showcasing potential as a steady defenceman. However, with World War II ongoing, Garrett enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy, and his ship was torpedoed by German submarine U-1228 and sank rapidly, killing all 90 crew members on board. To honour his sacrifice and the career that might have been, the American Hockey League established the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award in 1947. Brooklyn Americans
The New York Americans, colloquially known as the Amerks, were a professional ice hockey team based in New York City from 1925 to 1942. They were the third expansion team in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the second to play in the United States. The team never won the Stanley Cup, but reached the semifinals twice. While it was the first team in New York City, it was eclipsed by the second, the New York Rangers, which arrived in 1926 under the ownership of the Amerks' landlord, Madison Square Garden. The team played as the Brooklyn Americans during the 1941–42 season before suspending operations in 1942 due to World War II and long-standing financial difficulties. Garth Boesch
Garth Vernon Boesch (October 7, 1920 – May 14, 1998) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs between 1946 and 1950. He won the Stanley Cup three times with Toronto, from 1947 to 1949. 1943–44 Montreal Canadiens Season
The 1943–44 Montreal Canadiens season was the club's 35th season, 27th in the National Hockey League (NHL). The team would win the Stanley Cup for the fifth time. Bill Durnan would join the club as its new goaltender and he won the Vezina Trophy in his rookie season. Offseason At the Habs' training camp in 1943, Canadiens manager Tommy Gorman settled on Bill Durnan as his goalie. Durnan stated that he was happy as an amateur and happy with less money if it meant avoiding the stress of the professional game. On opening night, Durnan was not yet signed. Ten minutes before the first faceoff, he spoke with Gorman and reached a deal. Durnan signed the contract and played in the game. The result was a 2–2 draw with the Boston Bruins.
