Conn Smythe
Constantine Falkland Cary Smythe Military Cross, MC (; February 1, 1895 – November 18, 1980) was a Canadian businessman, soldier and sportsman in ice hockey and horse racing. He is best known as the principal owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1927 to 1961 and as the builder of Maple Leaf Gardens. As owner of the Leafs during numerous championship years, his name appears on the Stanley Cup eight times: 1932, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1962. Smythe is also known for having served in both World Wars, organizing his own artillery battery in the Second World War. The horses of Smythe's racing stable won the Queen's Plate three times among 145 stakes race wins during his lifetime. Smythe started and ran a sand and gravel business. New York Americans
The New York Americans, colloquially known as the Amerks, were a professional ice hockey team based in New York City from 1925 to 1942. They were the third expansion team in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the second to play in the United States. The team never won the Stanley Cup, but reached the semifinals twice. While it was the first team in New York City, it was eclipsed by the second, the New York Rangers, which arrived in 1926 under the ownership of the Amerks' landlord, Madison Square Garden (1925), Madison Square Garden. The team played as the Brooklyn Americans during the 1941–42 NHL season, 1941–42 season before suspending operations in 1942 due to World War II and long-standing financial difficulties. The demise of the club marked the beginning of the NHL's Original Six era from 1942 to 1967, though the Amerks' franchise was not formally canceled until 1946. David McKenzie Downie (March 11, 1909 – March 18, 1963) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 11 games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1932–33 season. Benny Grant
Benjamin Cameron Grant (July 14, 1908 – July 30, 1991) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goalie who played 53 games in the National Hockey League for the New York Americans, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins between 1928 and 1944. The rest of his career was spent in various minor leagues. Benny Grant was a junior star with the hometown Owen Sound Greys of the OHA, with whom he won the 1927 Memorial Cup. Grant found his niche in the newly created American Hockey League in 1936-37 where he starred for the Springfield Indians. In 1940-41 he moved on to the St. Paul Saints of the AHA and was named to the league's first all-star team after posting a 1.94 goals against average the next year. Fred Robertson
Frederick Alexander Robertson (October 22, 1911 – September 16, 1997) was a British-born Canadian professional ice hockey player who played 28 games in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings between 1932 and 1934. He won the Stanley Cup in 1932 with Toronto. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1929 to 1947, was mainly spent in the International American Hockey League/American Hockey League. He briefly served as head coach for John Carroll while playing for the Cleveland Barons. Robertson was born in the United Kingdom and moved to Canada at a young age, growing up in Toronto. Robert John Gracie (November 8, 1910 – August 3, 1963) was a Canadian professional ice hockey Centre (ice hockey), centre who played 10 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, New York Americans, Montreal Maroons, Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Black Hawks. Hec Kilrea
Hector Joseph "Hurricane" Kilrea (June 11, 1907 — September 6, 1969) was a Canadian ice hockey forward. He played for the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Falcons, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League between 1925 and 1940. After his NHL career ended, Kilrea spent four years in the American Hockey League, and retired in 1943. A noted scorer during his career, Kilrea twice finished in the top ten for scoring, and won the Stanley Cup three times, with the Senators in 1927 and twice with the Red Wings in 1936 and 1937. His brothers Ken and Wally, and nephew Brian were also NHL players. After retiring from hockey, Kilrea served in the United States Army during World War II, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Later in life, Kilrea worked for the Ford Motor Company. Lorne Chabot
Laurent Edward Chabot (October 5, 1900 – October 10, 1946) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. Chabot played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1926 to 1937. He was a member of two Stanley Cup championship teams, the New York Rangers in 1928, and the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1932. Chabot also played for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Black Hawks, Montreal Maroons, and New York Americans. Chabot won the Vezina Trophy in 1934–35 for allowing the fewest goals against. Playing career During his stint with the Rangers, he was billed as "Lorne Chabotsky" by Rangers' publicity men Bruno and Blythe, in an attempt to garner more Jewish fans.
