The 1920–21 Luxembourg National Division was the 11th season of top level association football in Luxembourg. The season was contested by eight teams, with Jeunesse Esch winning the championship. This was the first championship for Jeunesse Esch who are the most successful team in the division's history. Luxembourg National Division
The National Division (, , ), known as the BGL Ligue for sponsorship reasons, is the highest association football, football league in Luxembourg. Until 2011, it was known as the BGL Ligue, after the Luxembourg Football Federation managed to seal a sponsorship deal with Fortis (finance), Fortis. Before 2006, it contained twelve teams, but it expanded to fourteen for the 2006–07 Luxembourg National Division, 2006–07 season. Following the abandonment of the previous season, the 2020–21 Luxembourg National Division, 2020–21 season saw the further expansion of the league to 16 teams. The current champions are Differdange 03. The competition was first held in 1909–10 Luxembourg National Division, 1909–10, and has been held every year since, with the exceptions of 1912–13 and four seasons during the Second World War. Jeunesse Esch (full name ''Association Sportive la Jeunesse d'Esch/Alzette'') is a professional football club based in Esch-sur-Alzette, in south-western Luxembourg. The side play in the National Division, the highest league in the country, and have won the league title on 28 occasions between 1921 and 2010, the most of any team in Luxembourg. History The club was founded in 1907 as Jeunesse la Frontière d'Esch in reference to the proximity of their stadium to the border with France. "La frontière" was dropped to give the club its current name in 1918, which it retained until World War II, where the Nazi regime implemented the German name SV Schwarz-Weiß 07 Esch and the club had to play in the '' Gauliga Moselland'', finishing runners-up in the 1943–44 season. Sporting Circle Fola Esch (), usually abbreviated to Fola Esch or simply Fola, is a professional football club based in Esch-sur-Alzette, in south-western Luxembourg. They play their home games at Stade Émile Mayrisch, in the south of the city, which they share with their sister athletics club CA Fola Esch. History Founded in 1906 by the English language teacher Jean Roeder, Fola was the first football club in Luxembourg. During its heyday, it was the best club in the country, winning four National Division championships and two Luxembourg Cups between 1918 and 1924. Fola won another championship in 1930 and the Luxembourg Cup in 1955, but had since this time lost its place in Luxembourg's top flight. Union Sportive Luxembourg, usually known as Union Luxembourg, was a football club, based in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. It is now a part of Racing FC Union Luxembourg. History Union Luxembourg was formed in 1925 as an amalgam of US Hollerich Bonnevoie and Jeunesse Sportive Verlorenkost. Although US Hollerich had been one of the top clubs in Luxembourg, winning five titles consecutively, by 1925, its success had dried up. From the merger until the Second World War, the club would win only one trophy: the championship in 1927. In 1940, the Nazis renamed Union, along with all other clubs as part of the process of Germanisation. Between 1940 and 1944, Union's name would be ''Verein für Rasenspiele 08 Luxemburg''. Stade Dudelange was a football club from Dudelange, in southern Luxembourg. It is now a part of F91 Dudelange, which was formed by the merger of Stade, Alliance Dudelange, and US Dudelange in 1991. Stade was one of the country's most successful clubs, winning 10 National Division championships and four Luxembourg Cup titles; to this day, the former is the third-greatest haul by any club behind Jeunesse Esch and the defunct CA Spora Luxembourg. In its heyday of the late 1940s, Stade won four consecutive National Division titles. Including two championships won before World War II interrupted domestic play, Stade won a string of six consecutive titles, a feat that has never been matched. Football Association Red Boys Differdange was a football club, based in Differdange, in south-western Luxembourg. It is now a part of FC Differdange 03. History Red Boys was founded as ''SC Differdange'' in 1907, the year after Luxembourg's first club, Fola Esch, had been set up. Despite the clubs provenance, its first appearance in Luxembourg's league as Red Boys Differdange came only in 1919 (and, then, only in the second division). Soon, though, Red Boys would embark upon the greatest runs of success in Luxembourgish football. During the 1920s and 1930s, Red Boys competed with Spora Luxembourg for dominance of Luxembourgish football.
