1908–09 Birmingham F.C. Season
The 1908–09 Football League season was Birmingham Football Club's 17th in the Football League and their 9th in the Football League Second Division, Second Division, to which they were promotion and relegation, relegated at the end of the 1907–08 Football League, 1907–08 season. They began the season well, not dropping out of the top two until December, but gradually fell away until finishing in 11th position in the 20-team division. They also took part in the 1909–10 FA Cup, entering at the first round proper and losing in that round to Portsmouth F.C., Portsmouth. Alexander Watson (1864 – 12 July 1931) was secretary-manager of Birmingham Football Club from 1908 to 1911. Life and career Alexander Watson was born in 1864 in Patterdale, Westmorland, to Scottish parents, John Watson, a lead miner, and his wife, Helen. By the time of the 1871 United Kingdom census, 1871 Census, the family had moved to Monkwearmouth Shore, in Sunderland, County Durham, where John Watson had worked in the coal mines. Watson became a schoolteacher, a career he followed alongside his involvement with association football, football. Billy Jones (footballer, Born 1881)
William Henry Jones (24 March 1881 – 15 March 1948), also known as Bullet Jones and the Tipton Smasher, was an English professional footballer who played as a centre forward for Small Heath (renamed Birmingham in 1905) in the Football League and for Brighton & Hove Albion in the Southern League. Career Jones was born in Tipton, Staffordshire. He played for Smethwick Town and for Birmingham & District League club Halesowen before turning professional with Small Heath, newly promoted to the Football League First Division, in 1901. He was their leading scorer for four successive seasons, from 1903–04 to 1906–07, and his performances were rewarded in 1904 with selection for the Football League representative team which played against the Irish Football League. Edmund Eyre
Edmund Eyre (23 December 1882 – 1972), also known by the nickname of Ninty Eyre, was an English professional footballer who played as an outside left. He spent much of his playing career in the First Division of the Football League with Birmingham, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough. Playing career Eyre was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England. He was a pacy winger and good crosser of the ball who scored freely for home-town clubs Worksop West End and Midland League Worksop Town and then for Rotherham Town, also in the Midland League. The 1908 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the IV Olympiad and also known as London 1908) were an international multi-sport event held in London, England, from 27 April to 31 October 1908. The 1908 Games were originally scheduled to be held in Rome, but were relocated on financial grounds following the violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, which claimed over 100 lives; Rome eventually hosted the Games in 1960. Walter Samuel Corbett (26 November 1880 – 23 November 1960), nicknamed "Watty", was an English footballer and member of the United Kingdom team which won the gold medal in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Frank Womack
Francis Womack (16 September 1888 – 8 October 1968) was an English association football player and manager born in Stannington, Sheffield, Yorkshire. He still holds the league appearances record for Birmingham City playing 491 games and holds the league record for most games (510) by an outfield player without scoring a goal. He died in Caistor, Lincolnshire, at the age of 80. Playing career Womack began his professional football career in July 1908 when he joined Birmingham from Rawmarsh Albion, having previously played for Lapham Street.
