1904–05 Rangers F.C. Season
The 1904–05 season is the 31st season of competitive football by Rangers. Overview Rangers played a total of 33 competitive matches during the 1904–05 season. The team finished joint top of the league with Celtic, equal on points but with better goal difference. Since the concept of goal difference was not considered both teams played a Championship play-off which Celtic won 1–2. The Scottish Cup campaign saw the team reach the final where they played Third Lanark. John Tait Robertson
John Tait Robertson (25 February 1877 – 24 January 1935) was a Scottish football player and manager who played mainly as a left half. He won 16 caps for his country, scoring three goals. Having started his career at Morton, Robertson moved to Everton of the English Football League in 1895, and then Southampton in 1898, with whom he won the Southern Football League in his only season. He then returned to his homeland with Rangers, where he won three consecutive league titles in his first three seasons. Robertson was the first player signed to Chelsea in 1905, and served as their player-manager in their first-ever season, in addition to scoring their first competitive goal. Robert Campbell (footballer, Born 1882)
Robert Campbell (1882 – 13 March 1931) was a Scottish footballer who played for Partick Thistle, Rangers, Millwall Athletic and Bradford City. He was a full back who won the 1911 FA Cup with Bradford. Career Born in Lugar in 1882, Campbell started his football career with Partick Thistle, with whom he formed a partnership over several seasons with Andrew Wilson and won Scottish League XI and Glasgow FA representative honours, before moving to Rangers in January 1905 as emergency cover following the death of Nicol Smith. He moved to England and Millwall Athletic in the Southern League later that same year. He spent one season at Millwall, playing 28 games before moving to Division Two side Bradford City. He partnered Fred Farren in the City full back line, helping the club to win the Division Two title in 1907–08 and then the FA Cup in 1911. Bob McEwan
Robert Blaikie McEwan (1881 – 1957) was a Scottish footballer who played for clubs including St Bernard's, Bury, Rangers, Chelsea, Glossop and Dundee. He played over 100 games in the Football League and nearly 50 in the Scottish Football League and was also on the winning team in the 1910 Scottish Cup final. Career McEwan joined Bury of the Football League First Division from Scottish club St Bernard's in 1903; he played 35 times for Bury before returning to Scotland in 1904, where he played for Rangers. A year later, he returned to England to join newly-formed Chelsea. He played in the club's first game in the Football League and was technically the first Chelsea player to score a goal in a competitive match, as he scored an own goal which gave opponents Stockport County a 1–0 win. Tom Sinclair (footballer)
Thomas Smith Sinclair (1880 – 1968) was a Scottish footballer who played as a goalkeeper at the start of the 20th century. Career Sinclair began his career with Rutherglen Glencairn, winning the Scottish Junior Cup and Glasgow Junior League in 1902 alongside future Scotland internationals Jimmy McMenemy and Alec Bennett. He then joined Morton. He joined Rangers in 1904 and played there for nearly three seasons. He spent much of his time at Ibrox as a reserve, but eventually made 73 first-team appearances. John Walker (footballer, Born 1873)
John Walker (24 August 1873 – 17 February 1937) was a Scottish footballer who played for Armadale, Heart of Midlothian, Liverpool, Rangers and Morton in the 1890s and 1900s. He won national titles in Scotland and England, and represented both Scotland and the Scottish League XI. Playing career Club Born in Shotts, North Lanarkshire, Walker played for local team Armadale before being recruited by leading club Hearts, making his league debut for the Edinburgh club on 18 February 1893. He played four full seasons with Hearts, winning two League Championships and one Scottish Cup, and was nearing the end of a fifth campaign when he was signed for Liverpool by manager Tom Watson along with teammate Tommy Robertson for £350 on 30 March 1898. Robert Smyth McColl
Robert Smyth McColl (13 April 1876 – 25 November 1959) was a Scottish footballer who played as a centre forward. Playing career McColl started his career with junior club Benmore in 1892 and moved to Queen's Park in 1894. He represented the Scottish League in 1901. He later played professionally in England for Newcastle United, remaining on Tyneside for three years until he came back to Glasgow in 1904 to play for Rangers. He returned to Queen's Park in 1907, although the restoration of his amateur status had to be decided by the board of the club beforehand. McColl finished his football career in 1912, scoring 6 goals in his penultimate game against Port Glasgow Athletic, a Scottish scoring record which stands to the present day. Nicol Smith
Nicol Smith (25 December 1873 – 6 January 1905) was a Scottish footballer who played for Rangers. Biography Born in Darvel, Ayrshire, Smith played as a fullback for local sides Vale of Irvine, Royal Albert and Darvel, earning junior international selection, before joining Rangers in 1893. He made only two league appearances in his first season at the club, but by 1893–94, he had established himself in the Rangers team, missing just one of the 18 league fixtures. During that season he was also responsible for bringing Alex Smith (who came from the same village but was not a relation) to the club, and the winger went on to become an important member of the side for the next 20 years. Alec Smith (footballer, Born 1875)
Alexander Smith (7 November 1875 – 12 November 1954) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside left for Rangers and the Scotland national team. Career Born in Darvel, Ayrshire, Smith signed for Rangers in April 1894 from local side Darvel F.C., having been introduced at the suggestion of Nicol Smith (a defender who had made the same move a year earlier and came from the same village, but was not a relation). He stayed with the Ibrox club for 21 years until retiring in 1915, was part of Rangers' treble-winning ( Scottish Football League title, Glasgow Cup and Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup) teams of 1896–97, 1899–1900 and 1910–11, and played in 69 of the club's 74 matches during their run of four consecutive championships from 1898 to 1902. Finlay Speedie
Finlay Ballantyne Speedie (18 August 1880 – 5 February 1953) was a Scottish footballer who played for Rangers, Newcastle United and Scotland in the 1900s. He was a versatile forward who was most at home at inside left. Career Speedie began his career with junior clubs Clydebank and Strathclyde (playing for both in different competitions) then joined Rangers in 1900. Playing under William Wilton he won two League championships, a Scottish Cup, two Glasgow Cups, a Charity Cup and the 1901 Glasgow Exhibition Cup.
