1904–05 Ottawa Hockey Club Season
The 1904–05 Ottawa Hockey Club season, the club's 20th season of play, lasted from January 7, 1905, until March 11, 1905. Ottawa won the league championship of the Federal Amateur Hockey League and successfully defended its Stanley Cup championship against all challengers. Off-season After resigning from the Canadian Amateur Hockey League (CAHL) in January 1904, the club made plans to join the FAHL. However, before the season started, the club investigated returning to the CAHL and to helping create a merger of the FAHL with the CAHL. The teams of the CAHL were opposed to both initiatives and the club played the season in the FAHL. Two personal tragedies occurred during the off-season. Jim McGee died in a horse-riding accident in May. The McGee family did not wish Frank to continue to play hockey with only one good eye but Frank chose to play the season. Dave Finnie
David Nicholson Finnie (August 2, 1883 – October 29, 1969) was a Canadian ice hockey goaltender who played for the Ottawa Hockey Club. He was part of the renowned "Silver Seven" era of the team, which were Stanley Cup champions from 1903 to 1906. Finnie contributed to the team's Stanley Cup victory in 1905. Career Finnie grew up in Ottawa, and played for the Ottawa Aberdeens. In 1904–05, after the retirement of Bouse Hutton, he became the starting goalie for Ottawa. The team was the reigning Stanley Cup champion, by winning the Federal Amateur Hockey League (FAHL) season and a Stanley Cup challenge match against the Dawson City Nuggets. He was the Ottawa goaltender only for the one season. Billy Hague won the job the next season. He played for the Montreal Hockey Club in 1907–08. Suddy Gilmour
Sutherland Campbell "Suddy" Gilmour (August 7, 1883 – February 14, 1932) was a Canadian amateur athlete. He was a championship ice hockey player for the Ottawa Silver Seven of the 1900s. His brothers Billy Gilmour and Dave Gilmour also played for Ottawa at the same time. He won the Stanley Cup in 1903, 1904 with Ottawa. Sports career Gilmour played several sports, including rugby football with the Ottawa Rough Riders, ice hockey and lacrosse. He also boxed. He participated in all sports as an amateur. He joined the Silver Seven in 1903, and played only two years of ice hockey, both championship years for Ottawa. Suddy scored the series-winning goal in the 1903 play-off against Montreal to win the Stanley Cup for Ottawa. According to Llewelyn Bate, one-time manager of the Ottawa Club, Suddie played "clean", unlike the rest of the team, which was known for its rough play. Weldy Young
Weldon "Weldy" Champness Young (October 4, 1871 – October 27, 1944) was a Canadian businessman and athlete. Young was an ice hockey player for the Ottawa Senators (original), Ottawa Hockey Club, playing in its founding years in the 1880s and in the 1890s. Young later became a member of the Dawson City Nuggets which played against Ottawa in the 1905 Stanley Cup championship, 1905 Stanley Cup challenge. His older brother George Young (1865–1926) was one of the original Ottawa players and the two played together for Ottawa from 1889 to 1891. Young later became an investor and executive in mining in the Cobalt, Ontario, Cobalt, Ontario area. Playing career Young, a defenceman, first played for Ottawa Senators (original), Ottawa Hockey Club in 1889, as a 19-year-old, playing with his brother George.
