1894–95 British Home Championship
The 1894–95 British Home Championship was an international football tournament played between the British Home Nations. The competition was won by England, who like second placed Wales, did not lose a game. Wales however failed to win one either, scoring three draws and so finishing behind England. Scotland took joint second place with three points gained from a win, draw and a loss. Ireland came last with a single point garnered from their draw with Wales. England and Ireland played the first match of the competition, the Irish suffering a 9–0 defeat in Derby to give England the immediate advantage. Ireland and Wales then played a 2–2 draw in Belfast before England and Wales drew at the Queen's Club, the only international football match ever played there. Wales finished their competition as Scotland entered it, the teams drawing in Wrexham to give Wales three points in an unbeaten tournament. Steve Bloomer
Stephen Bloomer (20 January 1874 – 16 April 1938) was an England international footballer and manager who played for Derby County – becoming their record goalscorer – and Middlesbrough. The anthem " Steve Bloomer's Watchin'" is played at every Derby home game and there is a bust of him at the Pride Park Stadium. He is also listed in the Football League 100 Legends and English Football Hall of Fame. During his career, Bloomer was a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. A quick-thinking forward, he was able to shoot powerfully and accurately with either foot and his speciality was the ''daisy cutter'' – a low shot, hit with great power, speed and accuracy. In 535 First Division games he scored 314 goals and, after Jimmy Greaves, he is the second-highest all-time goalscorer in the top-flight of English football. Billy Bassett
William Isiah Bassett (27 January 1869 – 8 April 1937) was an English association footballer, director, and club chairman who served West Bromwich Albion for over half a century. Biography Playing career Born in West Bromwich, the eldest of a coal merchant's six children, at only , Bassett was initially considered too frail for a professional player. Establishing himself as a winger in various local amateur sides, he joined West Bromwich Albion in 1886, playing outside-right. Bassett made his League debut on 8 September 1888, as a winger for West Bromwich Albion in a 2–0 win against Stoke at the Victoria Ground. Bassett scored his debut League goal on 15 September 1888 at the County Ground, against Derby County. West Bromwich Albion won the match 2–1. Thomas Chapman (footballer)
Thomas Chapman (1871–1929) was a Welsh professional footballer. He began his career with Newtown before joining Football League side Manchester City and Grimsby Town. He joined Chatham Town in 1898 but was forced to move on when the club folded in 1901. He later spent several season with Maidstone United. He also earned seven caps for Wales between 1894 and 1897. Career Born in Newtown, Powys, Chapman began his career with his hometown side Newtown in 1890. He spent five years at the club, helping the side to victory in the 1895 Welsh Cup final in a 3–2 win over Wrexham. In 1895, he joined Football League side Manchester City, becoming the first former Newtown player to play in the league. At City, he joined up with fellow Welshman Billy Meredith who described Chapman as "a capital centre-half who never knew when he was beaten". Billy Lewis (1864–1935) was a Welsh international footballer in the late 19th century who played as a centre forward. He played for Bangor City before joining Everton for a brief period in the first ever season of The Football League, making 3 league appearances with the Toffees in September 1888. William Lewis was described by one source as, 'a speedy forward and very clever – does not use sufficient judgement'. Rupert Sandilands
Rupert Renorden Sandilands (7 August 186820 April 1946) was an English international footballer who played as an outside left. Early and personal life Sandilands was born on 7 August 1868 at the vicarage in Denford, near Thrapston in Northamptonshire, where his father Percival was the vicar. He was the youngest of six children. By 1881 the family was living at Lyvdene School in Devon, where his father was schoolmaster. Sandilands attended Westminster School. He worked in London as a clerk for the Bank of England. In addition to his football career, he also played hockey and cricket. Solitude (football Ground)
Solitude is a football stadium in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is the oldest football stadium in Ireland, and the home ground of Ireland's oldest football club, Cliftonville. The stadium holds 6,224, but is currently restricted to 2,530 under safety legislation. The stadium was built in 1890 and has undergone several renovations. In 2002, a new stand was built at one end of the ground to house visiting supporters, and in 2008, a new stand was completed behind the goal at the east end of the ground. A synthetic 3G pitch was installed to replace the previous grass surface in 2010. History Solitude was opened in 1890 after Cliftonville moved across the road from Oldpark Avenue. Harry Trainer
Harry Trainer (1872 – May 1924) was a Welsh international footballer. He was part of the Wales national football team, playing three matches and scoring two goals. He played his first match on 16 March 1895 against Ireland and his last match on 23 March 1895 against Scotland. At club level, he played for Leicester Fosse and was topscorer of the team of the 1895–96 season with 14 goals. William Sherrard
William Sherrard (25 August 1872 – 9 October 1895), familiarly known as Beg, was an Irish international footballer who played for Limavady, Glentoran and Cliftonville. The youngest of 12 children, Sherrard's older brother Joe Sherrard would also play for Ireland. Club career Sherrard began playing football with his local club, Limavady, alongside older brothers Joe and Jack and won the North West Cup on three occasions, scoring twice in five cup final appearances. After playing briefly as a guest for Derry Olympic, Sherrard moved to Glentoran in September 1894, scoring five goals before moving to Cliftonville in November. Sherrard scored five times for Cliftonville during the remainder of the 1894/95 season, and would also appear in the final of the Belfast Charity Cup for his new side, a match which Cliftonville lost 3–1 to Linfield. George Gaukrodger
George Gaukrodger (11 September 1877 – 4 January 1938) was a first-class cricketer who played more than 100 times for Worcestershire between 1900 and 1910; he also played once for the Players against the touring Australians in 1902. Born in Ireland and hailing from an Irish family, Irish born Gaukrodger qualified for Worcestershire and made his first-class debut against London County in May 1900, his first dismissal being the stumping of tail-ender Lionel Wells. He played a further two matches that season, and another two the following year, but it was not until 1902 that he established himself in the Worcestershire side, replacing Thomas Straw as regular wicket-keeper. In that 1902 season, Gaukrodger played 24 times, including the aforementioned game for the Players at Harrogate; he failed twice with the bat, but pulled off two stumpings.
