1888–89 Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. Season
The 1888–89 season was the first season of competitive league football in the history of English Association football, football club Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C., Wolverhampton Wanderers. They played in the inaugural season of the newly formed Football League. The club finished in third place in the league, and as runners-up in the FA Cup. The team scored the first goal in Football League history when they took the lead against Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa on the league's opening day. This match, as with all other home games for Wolves, was staged at Dudley Road in Wolverhampton, the only league campaign in which the club have not been based at Molineux Stadium, Molineux. Jack Southworth
John Southworth (11 December 1866 – 16 October 1956), also known as Jack and Skimmy Southworth, was an English footballer who played in the early days of professional football for Blackburn Rovers and Everton as well as being capped three times for England.He was the top scorer in the Football League in 1890–1891 and 1893–1894. David Wykes
David Wykes (15 September 1867 – 7 October 1895) was an English footballer who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Football League, making his debut in its inaugural season in 1888-1889. Born in Walsall on 15 September 1867, he played initially for Bloxwich Strollers, then Wednesbury Town and his home club Walsall Swifts before signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 1888. David Wykes, playing as one of the two wingers made his League debut on 15 September 1888, at Dudley Road, the then home of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Joe Cooper, also known as Joseph Cooper, also known as Jeremiah Cooper (born 1865) was an English footballer who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Woolwich Arsenal. Joseph Cooper was a strong running inside–forward always running for the ball. Early career Became a Youth Player in 1880 however, it is not known what football Cooper played as a youth. In 1886, now a senior player he signed for Milton FC. Milton FC was a small club based in a village north of Stoke-on-Trent. Tommy Knight (footballer)
Thomas Knight (born 1865) was an English footballer who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers. One of the early stars of the Wolves side, Tommy Knight could play in any forward position, but preferred the inside–right berth. Strong and powerful, he loved to dribble, head down with the ball and occasionally upset his colleagues by doing this far too much! Born in Wolverhampton in 1865, Knight joined Wolves at the age of 20/21 in August 1886 from Pickwick. Tommy Hunter (footballer)
Thomas Hunter (1863–1918) was an English footballer who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers in season 1888–89. Early career Tommy Hunter signed for Walsall Town in 1884. He failed to establish himself with Walsall Town but, as he was strong–running utility forward he was signed by Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in August 1886. Note: Matthews claims Hunter was at Walsall Swifts. Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts played on the same ground and amalgamated in 1888. Hunter made a fine start to his career with the Wanderers, scoring plenty of goals in the various friendly matches played by the club. He also claimed five goals in the FA Cup in his first season, including four–in–a match in a 14–0 win against Crosswell's Brewery on 13 November 1886. John Goodall
John Goodall (19 June 1863 – 20 May 1942) was an English professional footballer who rose to fame as a centre forward for England and for Preston North End at the time of the development of the Football League, and also became Watford's first manager in 1903. He also played cricket in the County Championship for Derbyshire in 1895 and 1896, being one of 19 players to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County.
